Wrestlers coming together, coach says, after tough break

In their second of two tough tournaments during Christmas break, Sweet Home’s wrestlers made it into the championship bracket in theWestview Northwest Duals competition last week, which included some of the better teams in Oregon and Washington in its 32-team field.

The Huskies won their preliminary pool, beating Rainier 76-6 and Wilsonville 63-18 before downing Glencoe 45-40.

“We’ve wrestled lot over this break,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “We wrestled well. We beat Glencoe, which is a tough, tough 6A school.”

The Huskies welcomed back two-time state champion Colton Schilling, who sat out for most of the month recovering from the football season. He went 5-0 on the weekend.

Sweet Home had a tougher road on Day 2, Thursday, going 1-3 against some of the top teams in the 5A division, including No. 2 Dallas, which beat Cascade to win the tournament championship. The Huskies beat Century 45-21, then lost to Dallas 49-21, West Albany 41-36 and Snohomish, Wash. 46-27.

The big winner for Sweet Home was Tyler Cowger, who swept to a 7-0 finish, including a 7-2 win over Dallas’ Wyatt Passantino, last year’s runner-up in the state 5A tournament.

“We’ve had some incredible efforts,” Thorpe said. “Ty Schilling is showing more and more maturity with each match and Ty Harvey has been a consistent wrestler who also is wrestling unselfishly for the team. David Skeen had a great weekend, going 4-3 and showing improvement. I’m proud of his effort. And Chance Jucutan competed really well, though his win-loss record didn’t necessarily show that. He wrestled better every time. Zach Gill wrestled well even though he was sick.”

Also last week, the junior varsity wrestlers competed at the Elmira Tournament, falling 45-28 to the hosts, but beating Springfield 42-36 and North Bend 42-28.

“To send the JV to Elmira to wrestle three varisty teams and come out of that 2-1, that’s pretty good,” Thorpe said.

He said Troy Hazleton and Anthony Hardy both had good matches against 5A Springfield, Hazleton coming from behind to pin his opponent and Hardy, behind 12-2, pulling it out by scoring a fall in his match.

“I like to see guys in that situation,” he said. “It just makes them better.”

With the Oregon Classic looming two weeks away, on Jan. 13-14, Thorpe said the Huskies are coming together and showing dedication and unselfishness as a whole.

“Egos are being put aside and guys are stepping up in leadership roles,” he said. “New and average wrestlers are doing the extra things. This team has had a lot of adversity, and some guys have reacted to that adversity by just quitting. We’ve got guys that won’t quit. They aren’t just giving up.

“That makes me awfully proud of them.”

The Huskies wrestle at Junction City Thursday, Jan. 5, at 6:30 p.m., then will host Elmira and Churchill on Wednesday, Jan. 11, before heading to the Classic.
