The second week of the season is a bit early to read too much into athletic teams’ successes or failures, but the Sweet Home wrestling team’s win at the Perry Burlison Invitational Tournament at Cascade Saturday, Dec. 8, was an encouragement for the Huskies.
Sweet Home finished with 11 place-winners, including champions Colton Schilling at 132 pounds and Wade Paulus at 195. Second-place winners were Tyler Schilling at 113 and Tyler Cowger at 152. Freshman Tyrel Miller (106), Justin Nicholson (120) and Zach Gill (285) finished third. Bob Malloy finished fourth at 143, Ryan Adams fifth at 132, Trever Olson fifth at 160 and David Skeen sixth at 220.
The Huskies scored 156.5 points, ahead of Lebanon (145.5) and Cascade (143).
In the junior varsity tournament, Sweet Home placed fifth out of 15 teams, as five of its six wrestlers placed.
Aaron Blanchard roared through the 106-pound bracket, scoring a 15-1 major decision over Levi King of Lebanon and pinning two other opponents to take the 106-pound championship. Brandon Keenon pinned his way through the 152-pound bracket to take that title and Ben Terry won the 182-pound bracket.
Nick Dadey was third at 138 pounds, scoring a technical fall over Molalla’s Kyle Brunson in the consolation final and Sam Woosley pinned Mike Fender of Stayton in the 145-pound consolation final.
After hosting Siuslaw, Molalla, North Marion and Stayton at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 11, the Huskies will split their team between tournaments at Thurston and Stayton on Saturday, Dec. 15, then will wrestle at Lebanon in the Dick Weisbrodt Duals during the Christmas break, Dec. 21-22.
