Sweet Home’s wrestlers continued their resurgence after stumbling out of the starting gate this season, finishing 6-1 at the 33-team Northwest Duals tournament Dec. 29-30 at Westview High School in Beaverton.
The Huskies’ only loss was to tournament champion Newberg, which finished second in the state 6A championships last year.
The Huskies won their pool, beating 6A teams Hood River 51-24, Lakeridge 66-18, and Glencoe 42-38, then beat David Douglas 47-25 before falling to Newberg 54-24 on Thursday. They finished with wins over Westview (52-29) and Forest Grove (48-27).
“The fun thing about this tournament is you get to wrestle people you don’t normally get to see,” said Coach Steve Thorpe, noting that Cascade was the only other 4A school in the meet.
He said that only awards for first and second place were handed out, so the emphasis was more on getting matches than on bringing home trophies.
The Huskies have improved since dropping their first four matches of the season, one to Cascade, he said.
“We haven’t forgotten that we started off 0-4,” Thorpe said. “Since then we’re 13-2.”
He said the team is wrestling well.
“We’re getting in shape and we’re wrestling some good schools in tough, tough competition. That’s getting us ready for February (region and state).
Colton Schilling and Tyler Cowger, both sophomores, ran the table at the Westview tournament. Schilling pinned Ernesto Escobar of Westview, who was second in the 6A rankings, and Josh Johnson of Forest Grove, who was ranked third and was second in the state 6A meet last year after winning it as a sophomore in 2009.
Thorpe said Kris Newport, Kyle Hummer and Zach Gill also wrestled particularly well and he was glad to see the return of Colby DeCleve.
Newport beat Robert Frasier of Hood River, ranked second in 5A at 152 pounds, and Gill came from behind with 20 seconds left to pin Cody Patterson of David Douglas, who was ranked third in the state at 215 pounds, to finish 5-2 for the tournament.
“He’s starting to beat some very good wrestlers,” Thorpe said of Gill. “Our guys that aren’t winning all the time are still wrestling hard for us. As a team we’re competing very, very well. We have an unselfish group, I believe.”
Sweet Home opens its Sky-Em schedule Thursday at LaPine, then travels to the Willamette Tournament on Saturday.
