Wrestlers finish back in the pack at Rose City tourney

Sweet Home’s wrestlers got a taste of top-flight competition last weekend at the Rose City Championships in Portland, and Coach Steve Thorpe said it’s just the beginning.

The Huskies placed 16th out of 25 teams at Rose City, held at Westview High School. The only placewinner was senior Tyrel Miller, who was fourth at 145 pounds, and would have placed higher if he had not lost 7-6 to Riley Seward of Edmonds-Woodway (Wash.) in the semifinals.

“Tyrel Miller did great,” Thorpe said. “It’s hard to say it was horrible officiating, but Tyrel won that match. The thing about Tyrel is, he didn’t pout about it.”

Miller then decisioned Franky Garcia of Kamiakin (Wash.) 1-0 before losing 4-1 to Patrick Boulanger of Newberg in the consolation final.

“He’s a leader and a great example, to kids from the Mat Club who are 4 or 5 years old to junior high,” Thorpe said.

The tournament was “incredibly tough,” he said. Only one weight division had two Oregon wrestlers facing each other in the final.

Sweet Home “had a great first day, but we didn’t do what we were supposed to on Day 2,” Thorpe said.”We took 14 wrestlers into Day 2. I was happy with some of our younger guys, winning matches, but as a team, we didn’t have as good a second day. We need to have a better second day.

“As coach it’s my job to fix that. We’re going to go back to work on how to succeed on Day 2. It’s going to come down to a lot of work and conditioning.”

In addition to Miller, Thorpe said senior 220-pounder Dalton Doerfler “had the best tournament he’s ever had for us,” pinning three opponents after an opening-round loss.

The Huskies hosted Stayton, Sutherlin, South Albany and Churchill last week in a five-way dual-match event, losing only to Churchill, one of the top teams in the 5A division, 48-30.

This weekend Sweet Home will travel to Grants Pass for the Winter Kickoff Tournament, which will feature 40 teams from Oregon, California and Nevada.

After a layoff from competition next week, they will be back in action Dec. 29-30 for the Northwest Duals at the Armory in Albany.

“This schedule I have us into is preparing us for February,” Thorpe said. “That’s the goal.”
