Wrestlers hit stride in dual wins over Oregon teams

Thurston Tournament

Sweet Home defeated three Oregon schools and lost to a Washington team in the Thurston duals wrestling tournament Saturday.

The Huskies beat McKay 55-12, Lowell 54-28 and Thurston 50-21. They lost 46-30 to Yelm, Wash., which is the defending 3A division state titlist.

Coach Steve Thorpe said the Huskies had to forfeit two weight classes against Yelm, which put them at a little more of a disadvantage.

“They were tough,” he said. “They’re a good team. We beat them on the mat. You take away those points and it could be a different thing.

He said Colton Schilling, Kris Newport, Tyler Cowger, Zach Gill and Trever Olson did particularly well for the Huskies.

Gill won four matches at heavyweight and Olsen beat Avery Caird of Thurston, one of the 6A’s top wrestlers.

“That was a very good win for him,” Thorpe said. “I’m seeing consistent efforts from guys who are laying it out the same way every time.”

The Huskies will be back in action Dec. 29-30 at the Northwest Duals at Westview High School in Beaverton, a 32-team tournament that will include both Oregon and Washington schools.

Woodburn, North Marion, West Albany Duals

In a four-way dual match at home on Dec. 14, the Huskies defeated Woodburn, North Marion and West Albany.

Freshman Justin Nicholson went 3-0 for the Huskies at 103 pounds, while Ty Harvey did the same thing at 130 pounds, Tyler Cowger at 152 and Kris Newport at 160 pounds. Kyle Hummer scored a big win at 140 when he pinned West Albany’s Tyler Davis, the No. 3-ranked 5A wrestler in the state.

“Our kids are starting to wrestled better and better,” Thorpe said. “We’re wrestling pretty solid right now.”
