Sweet Home downed Elmira and Stayton in district dual wrestling matches Thursday, Jan. 30, but it wasn’t a slam dunk.
Elmira gave the Huskies one of the toughest battles in recent memory from the Falcons and Stayton was hobbled by injuries, Coach Steve Thorpe said. The Huskies came away with a 62-12 win over the Eagles.
“This is probably one of the best Elmira teams I’ve seen them have,” he said of the 43-30 final score. “They are a very good team and they’ve been winning a lot of duals. It was good to get falls when we needed falls.”
Cole Ashcraft had a big win against the Falcons’ Hunter Weast, ranked 12th in the state going into the match, beating Weast 10-3. Against Stayton, Tyrel Miller upset Jordan Taylor, who was seventh-ranked in the 126-pound division, beating Taylor 7-6.
“That was a huge win for Tyrel,” Thorpe said. “He was down 4-0 and came from behind. That was big.”
The Huskies will face Newport and Central Thursday, Feb. 6, at Central before returning home to host Cascade at 6 p.m. On Feb. 13.
With some injuries and sickness in the wrestling room, nothing’s a given, Thorpe said.
“Central and Newport have the best teams they’ve had in a long time,” he said.
