Going into their final dual meet of the season, this Thursday at home against Elmira, Sweet Home’s wrestlers are dialing it up for district.
The Huskies dominated Cottage Grove 64-18 last Thursday, Feb. 4, then went 4-1 at the Todd Surmon Invitational at West Albany, losing only to 5A power Churchill, 52-22.
“Cottage Grove was a great win for us,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “Cottage Grove is a good team, but we won the close matches. I was more proud of how people competed than of our wins and losses.”
He said an example was Oscar Hernandez, who moved up to 160 from 152 pounds, though it cost him some matches last week.
Bryce Coulter scored a big fall against Cottage Grove’s Jason Stalder and Dalton Doerfler pinned Elijah Farrell, both of which were quality wins, Thorpe said.
“At this time of the year, we’re bumping people around, trying some things,” he said. “Winning a dual is not important right now. It’s about competing, getting yourself ready for the district tournament.”
The Huskies’ depth and focus showed, he said, in that they did well at West Albany despite Thorpe’s absence for most of the day. He officiated at the funeral of longtime wrestling supporter Pat Baxter, leaving assistants Tomas Rosa and Brock Crocker in charge.
The Huskies beat West Albany 54-22, Stayton 72-11, Ridgeview 83-0, and Thurston 51-24.
A late-season boost for Sweet Home has been senior Brandon Keenon, who hasn’t wrestled since he was a freshman, but who went 5-1 for the Huskies at 190 pounds, his only loss coming to Churchill’s Riley Jaramillo, who last week signed to wrestle with Oregon State University.
“He came out late,” Thorpe said of Keenon, who scored four falls in six matches. “He’s been a nice addition.
“Getting falls this time of year lets you know you can beat people. Our focus is on our regional tournament and state tournament right now.”
The Huskies will make their final home appearance of the year at 6 p.m. Thursday, against Elmira.
“It will be a great night of wrestling,” Thorpe said. “Our aim is to pack the house.”
