Sweet Home’s wrestlers started their weekend off well Thursday evening with a perfect match score against Sisters, 84-0.
“It wasn’t just a bunch of flops,” Coach Steve Thorpe said, noting that the Outlaws brought nearly a full line-up to the match. “The kids showed up.”
The Huskies, though, “got on a roll” early, he said, producing some come-from-behind victories en route to the perfect score, which meant each Sweet Home wrestler scored six points, either via a fall or a forfeit. As it was, the only one who got a forfeit was heavyweight Gavin Baskin.
Freshman 145-pounder Boe Baxter, wrestling his first varsity match of the season, ended a close competition with a sudden lateral drop that led to a fall.
Both Joe Rasmussen, at 138 pounds, and Brycen Denver, at 170, came from behind to score falls.
“That’s always fun,” Thorpe said of those performances.
The gym was full and the cheerleaders made an appearance. Alum Bob Woodard was honored.
“It was all about wrestling,” Thorpe said. “It was just a really fun night.”
Immediately thereafter, the Huskies boarded a bus to Liberty High School in Hillsboro, where they spent Friday and Saturday at the Reser’s Tournament of Champions, considered one of the toughest in the state, with most of the top teams from every division present.
The varsity got placewinners from Kobe Olson, who was third at 120 pounds, and Tyrel Miller, fifth at 145.
Olson had a “heartbreak loss” to Lebanon’s Justin Lacy after getting caught in a cradle and losing 12-6 in the semifinals. He major-decisioned his next two opponents to take third.
“That’s how it goes,” Thorpe said. “Justin Lacy is good. Nobody is bad in this tournament. He got his opponent on top and (Lacy) took advantage of it.”
Miller, he said, has been as consistent a performer for the Huskies “as they come” all year – “in the classroom, in leadership, in training. Guys like him don’t come along that often. It’s so good for our program to have him.”
Three Huskies placed in the junior varsity division, which was as competitive as the varsity. Bryce Coulter, who returned from a knee injury and operation for the Sisters match, won the 182-pound JV title with three falls and a major decision.
Both Zak Rivera (126) and Justin Kurtz (132) took fifth in the JV brackets.
“To have guys step up and wrestle, win matches, to just compete – it’s so good at this point in the season,” Thorpe said.
The Huskies travel to Sutherlin Thursday for a dual and again to Cottage Grove on Feb. 4 before returning for their season home finale on Feb. 11 versus Elmira.
“We’re cranking along where we should be right now,” Thorpe said. “Now our main focus is to win out these last few duals we have, then get ready for regionals and get as many guys through that tournament as we can.”
