Wrestlers second at Willamette, ready for OC

Sweet Home’s wrestlers placed second in the 15-team Willamette Invitational tournament Saturday behind first-place finishes by Colton Schilling at 119 pounds and Kris Newport at 152.

With 145-pound Tyler Cowger out sick, the Huskies scored 199.5 points to finish behind Sprague (199) and ahead of Churchill (185) and Thurston (144).

Sophomore Wade Paulus wrestled into the finals at 189 pounds and Jacob Jewell, who lost his first match in the 160-pound category, fought his way back in through the consolation bracket and wound up third, pinning the wrestler who had defeated him in the first round. Sophomore Zach Gill also wrestled to a third-place finish after losing his first match.

“It was a great day for Sweet Home wrestling Saturday,” Coach Steve Thorpe said, that “a lot” (nine) of the Huskies placed in the top four.

He was referring not only to the high school team, but to the Mat Club, which had wrestlers at three tournaments, at Marshfield, Redmond and Newberg, qualifying 17 – the most ever for Sweet Home – for this weekend’s Oregon Classic Tournament in Redmond.

A mixed team of varsity and JV Husky wrestlers finished seventh in the 16-team Bob Bishop Tournament at Willamina behind a second-place finish by Colton Holly at 125 pounds, Hunter Bidwell’s third-place at 130 pounds, and Nate Melcher’s third place at 171, beating teammate Chance Jucutan, who was fourth. Ian Search placed fourth as well, at 112.

“Right now our focus is to stay healthy,” Thorpe said. “We’re working to get ready for the Oregon Classic and the Tournament of Champions. We’re not where we are going to be, but we’re not wasting any time to try to get there.”

Sweet Home will travel to Cottage Grove for a dual meet at 5 p.m. Wednesday, then will leave for the Oregon Classic, which starts at 10:15 a.m. Friday.
