Sweet Home’s wrestlers took third place in the 10-team Todd Surmond Memorial Wrestling Tournament at West Albany Friday, Jan. 3.
The Huskies’ lone loss was to Thurston, 51-25. They beat St. Helens 66-16, Ridgeview 56-27, Newport 72-18 and Southridge 48-25.
“I was happy, coming out of that 4-1,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “For the first time, our team as a team won some matches we shouldn’t have and didn’t give up falls. When you do that, you start having more success. They did a good job stepping up.”
The Huskies were tough in the lighter weights, as Tyler Schilling (126), Tyrel Miller (120) and Aaron Blanchard (113) swept their matches.
“Tyler Schilling continues to have great weekends and it’s nice to see and Tyrel Miller and Aaron Blanchard put together some wins,” Thorpe said. “We’re starting to get where we want to be with guys’ conditioning and stuff like that. It’s a process. It takes a little time.”
Elswhere, Jason Miller got “three good wins” and Ben Terry, who was wrestling for the first time this season at 182 pounds, provided some leadership and consistency, he said.
Troy Hazelton and Colyn Van Eck traded back and forth at 220 and 285, and senior Spencer Knight, who hasn’t wrestled since junior high, pinned two of his three opponents at 195.
“Spencer’s filling in a hole for us,” Thorpe said.
Filling holes is what it’s all about right now as the Huskies solidify their line-up, he said.
“We need to know where we need to get better.”
The Huskies will hold two of their three remaining home matches of the season this week, hosting Churchill at 6 p.m. Wednesday, and Junction City and Taft in a cross-over dual Thursday, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Cascade will also participate, but Sweet Home won’t wrestle the Cougars until later in the season.
