Sweet Home’s wrestlers placed third in the 4A division at the Oregon Classic tournament in Redmond Friday and Saturday.
Though it wasn’t a championship, Coach Steve Thorpe said he was pleased with the Huskies, particularly considering how deep the 4A is this year.
Crook County, which moved down to 4A this year, beat Ontario for the championship. Sweet Home, which lost by two points to Ontario in the semis, 36-34, beat Cascade 41-30 for third.
“It was a good weekend,” Thorpe said. “Third at the Oregon Classic in the 4A division is pretty impressive.”
The Huskies underwent some line-up changes throughout the tournament, moving some wrestlers around . Ian Search and Colton Schilling both moved down a weight, to 103 and 112, during the weekend, while Wade Paulus fluctuated between 215 and 189.
“We had some guys who had to wrestle unselfishly, who had to more up a weight and down a weight to make room for others,” Thorpe said. “They competed very well.”
Schilling, Kyle Hummer and Kris Newport all ran the table.
“Kyle Hummer had a banner weekend, beating people who were ranked above him.” Thorpe said.
Colby DeCleve pinned Shane Licari of Estacada, the second-ranked 125-pounder in the state and Kyle Sorenson “had a great weekend as well,” he said. Thorpe said Newport and Tyler Cowger were “steady, consistent “ performers throughout the weekend.
Sweet Home also traveled to Cottage Grove Wednesday, Jan. 12, for a Sky-Em dual meet, beating the hosts 67-11 and LaPine 54-24.
The Huskies will host Sisters and Sprague Thursday, Jan. 20, beginning at 5 p.m. and will travel to Elmira on Friday for more Sky-Em action.

Five members of the Sweet Home Mat Club placed in the Oregon Kids Wrestling Classic, held Saturday and Sunday.
Jackson Casteel won the 160-pound novice championship and Nate Melcher was first in the 171-pound cadet division.
Bo Baxter was second at 85 pounds in the intermediate division, Braydon Newport was fourth at 55 pounds in the bantam division and Joey Hermasillo was fourth in the novice 75-pound division.
“That is an incredibly tough tournament,” Thorpe said.
