Sweet Home’s wrestlers got to show their stuff in front of the home crowd Friday as they notched three dual-meet victories during a four-way meet with Elmira, Lebanon and Silverton at Husky Gym.
The Huskies defeated Lebanon 57-20, Silverton 48-27 and a depleted Elmira squad 75-6.
“Overall, we competed well,” Coach Steve Thorpe said.
Danny Johnson, who sat out the team’s match at Elmira last week, was back and “competed well” at 119 pounds, Thorpe said.
Nick Pitts, at 160 pounds, scored an 18-0 technical fall over Anthony Ough of Elmira, who beat Pitts by a major decision last year at this meet.
“That shows improvement,” Thorpe said.
Thanks to forfeits, several Sweet Home wrestlers did not compete in all three duals, but three who did swept their matches: freshman Tyler Holly, senior Johnson and Pitts.
Thorpe said he wasn’t that concerned about victories as he was about wrestlers just going hard for the whole match.
“Right now, not being concerned with wins and the guys who lost, the focus of the entire staff is in how we compete,” he said. “Some guys still don’t realize that a match is six minutes.
He said he likes what he’s seeing from some of the newer arrivals to the team and he praised some Huskies who are wrestling injured.
“Our younger kids in the lineup right now are competing very hard,” Thorpe said. “Without depth, some of our guys are wrestling through injuries, through pain.”
The Huskies have a big week ahead, with a match at Cascade on Friday and the Cottage Grove Tournament on Saturday.
