Sweet Home’s wrestlers opened their season Friday with a four-team tournament in their own gym, beating South Umpqua 48-28 and Lebanon 56-23, and losing to 5A powerhouse Redmond 49-19.
Coach Steve Thorpe said he was happy with the Huskies’ performance, but he expects bigger and better things down the line.
“We wrestled really well,” he said. “When we start right now having guys not at the weight they’re going to be, I am a little apprehensive about how we would perform. Quite honestly, I didn’t expect to out-condition the other teams as much as we did. I was excited to see that. I don’t think we’re really in shape yet, not where we’re going to be.”
Several wrestlers had big nights. Kris Newport, wrestling at 135 pounds, defeated Redmond’s Sean Soliz for the first time in his career.
“They’ve wrestled each other numerous times and (Newport) has never won,” Thorpe said. “This was Kris’ time.”
Newport also won his other two matches, both by falls.
It was a big night for some juniors.
Brock Crocker, wrestling at 145 and 152 pounds, pinned all three of his opponents, drawing praise from Thorpe.
“Brock had three falls on the evening,” he said. “He wrestles at such a fast pace that he can do that quickly.”
Taylor Tagle, also a junior, finished with three victories at 130 pounds.
“Taylor Tagle last year was wrestling at 103,” Thorpe said. “Now he’s wrestling at 130 and now he knows he can win at this weight.”
Another outstanding performance, Thorpe said, came from junior Mitch Grove, who wrestled “very, very hard,” including a near-win over South Umpqua defending state champion Brian Bowers at 119 pounds.
“He took Brian Bowers and had him beat – he was ahead by four until he got thrown at the end,” Thorpe said. “Mitch is just hard to score on. We just have to focus on him making good decisions in his wrestling.”
The Huskies will travel to Cascade on Friday for the Cascade Perry Burlison Classic at 1 p.m..
“We are so far from where we are going to be,” Thorpe said. “Right now we have guys wrestling up weight classes, wrestling unselfish. We’re not where we will be yet. Our ultimate goal is in February.”
