Sweet Home’s girls finished second in the inaugural Oregon Classic High School Women’s Duals Friday and Saturday, Jan. 14-15, at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.
The Huskies won their pool on Friday with wins over Riverside (54-6), Taft (36-24) and Bend (48-12)
In the championship round on Saturday, the Huskies lost 36-24 to Thurston to place second, after beating LaPine (36-24) and Century (48-12). McKay was third and La Pine fourth.
Senior Paige Chafin pinned her way through the two-day event, winning six matches.
“Paige had a good weekend,” said girls Coach Gracie Stutzman. “That was exciting. Our goal was first place, but we were pretty proud of how the girls did.”
The Classic, which is one of the premier wrestling tournaments in the state for all levels of high school athletes, was a new experience for most of the Huskies 12 of whom had really never wrestled before this year.
“It’s like a whole new place for a lot of these girls,” Stutzman said. “You have to improvise. A lot of them had to make weight for the first time. I told them, ‘Once you get to the Classice, we’re stepping up the intensity, basically now looking toward regionals and state.”
The Huskies “bumped around weight classes a lot,” particularly 155-pounders Natalie Templin and Miah Miller, she said.
“Our girls are stepping in and unselfishly battling,” Head Coach Steve Thorpe said. “To lose a close one to Thurston in the finals is pretty incredible. They’re setting the bar high for women’s wrestling in Sweet Home.”
Sweet Home will compete this weekend against seven other schools in the Lady Dragon Duals at Dallas High School on Friday, Jan. 21, then will compete in an open tournament for girls Saturday, also at Dallas.
“The open will be good so we can see where everyone comes out,” Stutzman said.
