Wrestling: Huskies sweep home meet, go 3-1 at Thurston

Sweet Home’s boys swept three opponents in a round-robin duals wrestling match at home Thursday, Dec. 16, before moving on to Thurston Saturday, where the Huskies went 3-1, losing to the hosts.

Sweet Home beat Cascade 66-15 in the Thursday match.

At Thurston, the Huskies defeated Tillamook 49-23 and Marshfield 60-24, two programs that are perennial contenders for trophies at the state championships.

Coach Steve Thorpe said the Huskies are getting back to full strength after having several starters out with illness.

“We’ve got four guys back who were sick, out of the lineup. It’s nice to have them back.”

He said sophomore Kyle Sieminski is “wrestling solid right now,” as is junior Jake Sieminski, despite three losses in the last two weeks, two of those to Stayton’s Mauro Michel, one of the top wrestlers in the state at any level.

“Kyle Watkins is starting to wrestle good too. We just got Ethan (Spencer) back from being sick.

“We’ve had some incredible leadership from Trenton Smith. He persevered through (despite being sick). It’s that cold and flu that people are getting right now.”

Sophomore David Steagall and senior Charlie Crawford are also finding their strides, he said.

“David’s been competing his tail off,” Thorpe said. “We’ve had a lot of different guys who’ve stood out.”

Though the girls did not wrestle an organized tournament Thursday, he said the team, which is largely newcomers to the sport, is making significant progress.

“We’re starting to see some pretty great strides from (juniors) Kendra Jamison and Kelsie Rush,” he said. “They’re workout partners and it shows. They’re wrestling with intensity and strength.

“(Junior) Zoe Erevia is also really showing some promise, getting better all the time,” he added.

The Huskies, both boys and girls, will be back in competition next week at the Northwest Duals, hosted by West Albany at the Linn County Expo Center. Boys wrestling is on Dec. 29, with the girls competing on Dec. 30, all in duals format. Wrestling starts at 9 a.m. both days.
