Seniors Paige Chafin and Kami Hart led the Husky girls to a second-place finish at the 20-team Perry Burlison Girls Tournament, hosted by Cascade Saturday, Dec. 4.
Thirteen Huskies scored a total of 175 points to finish behind McKay (22 wrestlers/236 points) and ahead of Thurston (14 wrestlers/159 points).
The varsity boys finished fourth in a 20-team field, with 120 points, behind Crook County (250), Thurston (201) and Scappoose (128). Cascade was fifth with 99.5 points.
Seniors Paige Chafin and Kami Hart were the top finishers of the day for Sweet Home, Chafin taking first at 125 pounds with four straight falls in the girls competition and Hart first at 190, also pinning her way through.
“The girls showed up,” Head Coach Steve Thorpe said, noting that the bracketing was open. “Paige and Kami just absolutely showed up. They’ve been chasing tournaments all over the place, working on becoming better. They’re two of the tops in their weight classes in the state.”
The top two finishers for the boys in the lower weights were Kyle Sieminski, second at 113 after a loss in the finals to Crook County’s Landon Lavey, and Jake Sieminski, second at 132, after falling to Stayton’s Mauro Michel in the final.
Tucker Weld was second at 195, after a loss in the final to Crook County’s Ray Solis, and heavyweight Colby Gazeley was second after losing to Cascade’s Teagan Allen in the 285-pound final.
“The 132-pound bracket was the toughest in the tournament,” Thorpe said, noting that Jake Sieminski took a 5-2 decision off Crook County’s Cash Wells, last year’s 5A state champion, before losing to three-time state titlist Michel.
He noted that the boys were missing Christian Gregory and Ethan Spencer, two big contributors, and he pulled Kyle Watkins to keep him healthy and Weld was not 100 percent.
Watkins was sixth at 126, and Kaden Zajic finished sixth at 160, as the boys’ other two place-winners.
Kaylene Zajic was second at 155 for the girls, losing to Averie Stockwell of Thurston in the finals.
Third-place finishers were Kendra Jamison at 105, Zoey Erevia at 140, and Natalie Templin at 155.
Alyssa Peterson was fourth at 135, Trinity Landtroop was fifth at 115, and Cadence Makinson was fifth at 140. Ivy Dewitte was sixth at 125 and Miah Miller was sixth at 155.
The boys had four champions in the junior varsity division: Emilio Grajiola at 97-100, Killan Boggs at 109-113, Dominic Freeman at 187-190 and Jacob Landtroop at 129-130. Brody Olson was second at 124-126, and Ezra Martin was second at 140-142. Placing third were Bode Hart (191-202), Preston Kegler (143-144) and Dylan Sharp (190-198). Jackson Barringer was fourth at 158.
“It’s early in the season and we’re always looking to improve,” Thorpe said. ” We put four in the (boys) finals. To go into that shorthanded and get top four out of 20 teams is not bad.”
The Huskies went 4-0 at Lebanon’s Dick Wesibrodt Invitational on Dec. 1, Spencer pinning his way through at 170 pounds.
Sweet Home’s boys will be at the Rose City Classic, one of the top tournaments in the state, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 10-11. No spectators are allowed on Friday.
The Huskies will host a girls and novice tournament Thursday, Dec. 10, at 4 p.m.
