Youngsters drew some lines in the sand along with the veterans last week as Sweet Home’s wrestlers hosted a pair of four-way matches.
The Huskies beat South Albany 66-8 and Gladstone 74-3, then lost to Cascade 40-33.
“Once again the Cascade program is rich in tradition,” said Huskies Coach Steve Thorpe. “They’ve always been a rival. They’re well-coached and it’s early in the season. That was the second time our guys have touched the mats. If we could have traded one match with Cascade, we would have beaten them.”
On Friday, Sweet Home beat Elmira 60-19, Silverton – on criteria – after tying 34-34, and Lebanon 57-24.
The match with Silverton, a 5A school, was the tightest margin Thorpe said he’d ever experienced in dual-meet competition. The decision went to the seventh criteria – near-fall points before the Huskies prevailed.
When the dust had settled, senior Rob Helfrich (189) and junior Danny Johnson (112) remained undefeated through the second week of the season. Helfrich is 10-0 with nine falls and one technical fall.
“Danny Johnson, at 112, has really been looking tough,” Thorpe said.
Freshmen Brock Crocker and Taylor Tagle, and sophomore Jack Perry are proving themselves as well.
Crocker beat Cascade senior Mike Coleman, the top-ranked wrestler in the state at 125 pounds, Wednesday, 6-4, and beat Silverton’s Zach Paredes on Friday, 11-8 in another tough match.
Tagle went into Friday’s matches undefeated, but lost by a fall to Silverton’s Zack Clark in 1:49.
Perry won all his matches Friday by falls.
“Although not everybody’s going to win, I’m very happy with how some of our guys are trying to win even if they’re not,” Thorpe said. “That’s what’s important – wrestling good.”
The Huskies will wrestle Friday, Dec. 15, at the Cascade Tournament and will send two groups of wrestlers Saturday, Dec. 16, to tournaments at McKay and Central Linn.
