Young golf team improves by 27 strokes

The Sweet Home golfers are improving.

That’s the word from Coach Pat Davis, who saw his boys varsity team place fifth out of eight league teams at a tournament hosted by Stayton and Cascade on March 31.

“We’re getting better,” Davis said.

The Huskies shot 443, 27 strokes better than they did in their season opener at Tokatee on March 18.

“That’s the kind of growth I’m looking for,” Davis said.

Brenner Roberts led the team for the second tournament in a row, shooting 89 to break 90 for the first time in his career and finish fifth.

“His swing’s coming around. He can bomb it pretty good. If he hits his driver, he’ll be competitive,” Davis said.

Senior Tommy Glassco, in his first year on the varsity, shot 113 to better his score at Tokatee by nine strokes. Devin Larsen shot 121, a 15-stroke improvement.

The JV and girls teams played Friday, April 3, at Fiddler’s Green near Junction City, an 18-hole, par 54 course.

John Fonseca shot an 83 to place fifth out of 29 boys. The Huskies’ three girls were the only females in the match but “they all did really well,” Davis said. Haley May shot 97.

“It was good to get the JV players out there,” Davis said. “It was their first competitive meet. They had fun and they got to walk the course with players from other schools, learn about scoring, etiquette, pace of play, that kind of thing.”

The Husky varsity are back in action Tuesday, April 7, playing at Diamond Woods, hosted by Junction City.
