Young Huskies on their way to state 4A softball playoffs

Regis 8, Sweet Home 4

Regis snapped the Huskies’ four-game winning streak in softball 8-4 in softball Monday night in Sweet Home.

“We really came out and played without concentration tonight,” Coach Steve Hummer said. “We committed three errors in the field but made several other mental mistakes that cost us tonight.

“Tasha (Saunders) pitched well, which is nice as we start into the playoffs. I’m really proud of Bayli (Riggs) as well. She has really carried us in the circle the last few weeks.”

The two teams were tied 2-2 after one inning. Regis scored another pair of runs in the third. The Huskies tied up the score again, 4-4, in the sixth, but Regis put away four runs in the final inning to win the game.

The Huskies clinched a state playoff game on Friday when Philomath lost to Newport, Hummer said. “We set our goals to go to the playoffs this year, and it is a great accomplishment for us. I am very excited for our girls. It has been an up-and-down season for us, but they have showed enough guts to hang in there and find a way to accomplish our goals.”

The Huskies will play at Cascade, Stayton or Estacada in the first round of state playoffs.

Sweet Home 17, Pleasant Hill 7

The Huskies defeated Pleasant Hill 17-7 under the 10-run rule in five innings at home on Thursday.

“Both teams came out and really hit the ball early,” Hummer said. “Tasha started for us and struggled hitting her locations. She has been battling sickness and arm soreness, so she was a little rusty. I really like how she competes though. She is a fighter.

“Bayli came in to pitch in the fourth inning and really shut them down. It was a gutsy effort by her since she pitched both games at Taft the day before.

“Offensively we answered them every time they got something going, which is very important.”

Becky Spencer went 3-3 with three RBIs. Hailee Hunergardt went 2-2, and Riggs went 2-4 and scored four runs.

Sweet Home 3, Taft 1

The Huskies won a doubleheader at Taft on May 6, starting with a 3-1 victory.

“We hit the ball well, but it was just one of those days the ball seemed to always land in their mitt,” Hummer said. “Shelbey Gillespie hit a solo homerun over the left field fence in the top of the fifth to tie the game, and we were able to add two more in the sixth.”

Becky Spencer, Jessalyn Seiber, Gillespie, Saunders, Lacey Mink, and Laura Gourley all got hits.

“We stranded 11 runners on base which was disappointing,” Hummer said. “We were always one hit from opening the game up but just did not seem to be able to get a big hit.

“Bayli pitched well for the win. Tasha was having some arm soreness, so Bayli had to pitch both games and did a great job.”

Sweet Home 7, Taft 0

The Huskies finished the doubleheader, shutting out Taft 7-0.

“We jumped out early with three runs in the first,” Hummer said. “Bayli came up with a big hit after Mink, and (Paige) Niemi got on base.

“Again, we hit the ball well but could not get the game really cracked open. We stranded 11 more runners on base.

“Defensively, Bayli gave up a hit to the lead-off hitter in the first and then did not allow another base runner until the seventh inning. She was really dialed in for the second game and dominated.

“Tiffanie Cuilla made couple of good plays in the field, and the rest of the girls played solid defense.”
