The New Era
The Sweet Home Swim Club
has been busy training and com-
peting in long course, 50-meter or
Olympic-sized swim pools, since
the voters of Sweet Home passed
the local option levy in May.
Most recently, several swim-
mers competed in championship
meets.
Megan Hagar, 10, got things
started off with a strong showing
at the Oregon Swimming 10 & un-
der championships July 14 and 15.
Megan competed in Beaverton at
the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center
against the best 10-year-olds in the
state.
On the first day of the meet,
she finished eighth in the 200 me-
ter freestyle, ninth in 100 meter
butter
ly, and seventh in the 50 me-
ter backstroke. Day two brought
strong performances in the 50 me-
ter freestyle, in which she finished
sixth, and fourth-place finishes in
both the 50 meter butterfly and 100
meter backstroke.
The following week, July 19-
22, six swimmers competed in
the Oregon Swimming 11 & over
championships at Mount Hood
Community College.
Lauren Yon, 12, placed sev-
enth in the 200 meter individual
medley, fourth in the 50 meter
breaststroke, third in the 100 me-
ter breaststroke, and seventh in the
400 meter freestyle. She also com-
peted in the 200 meter breaststroke
and 400 meter individual medley,
but did not place in those events.
Mia Davis, also 12, competed
in the 200, 400, and 800 meter
freestyle events, as well as the
100 backstroke and the 100 and
200 meter butterfly. Though she
did not place in the top eight, Mia
had several best times including a
10-second drop in the 400 meter
freestyle.
Lucia Davis, 13, competed in
the 50, 100, and 200 meter free-
style events. After
inishing tied
for sixth in the morning prelimi-
naries in the 50 freestyle, she and
Coach Junia Calhoon chose for her
to not compete in the final of that
event. Lucia later finished second
in the 100 meter freestyle and was
the 13-year-old girls state champi-
on in the 200 meter freestyle.
Makayla Nelson, also 13,
placed fifth in the 100 backstroke,
third in the 400 freestyle, seventh
in the 200 backstroke, and seventh
in the 200 freestyle. She also com-
peted in the 50 and 100 meter free-
style events.
Rawlins Lupoli, 12, compet-
ed in his first state championship,
swimming the 100 meter breast-
stroke. The younger swimmers
were joined by 17 year old Naomi
Gunselman and her 19 year old
brother Gabriel (Gravy). Naomi
competed in several events, but
was hampered by sickness. Gravy
competed in his last swim meet
and was greeted by his teammates
and family with hugs and words
of thanks for being an outstanding
teammate and mentor after finish-
ing his final swim.
Lucia Davis was back swim-
ming at the Mount Hood pool the
following week competing in the
Speedo Western Section Sr. Cham-
pionships. The meet is open to
swimmers of any age from Oregon,
Washington, Alaska, Hawaii, Wyo-
ming, Montana, Colorado, Idaho,
Utah, New Mexico, and Arizona.
She swam in the 200, 400, 800,
and 1500 meter freestyle events.
Though she did not make finals
in any of her events, she got best
times in the longer three events.
The swim club will be taking
the month of August off, returning
to practice Sept. 4.
A team try-out will be held
shortly after the team returns to
training, or people interested can
stop by a practice at the Sweet
Home Community Pool for infor-
mation about the team.
