2 file for School Board election

Two candidates had filed to run as of Monday, Feb. 27, in the May 16 election for the Sweet Home School District Board of Directors.

Filing to run in the election thus far are incumbents Jason Redick for Zone 7, at large, and Michael E. Adams for Zone 8, at large.

Six positions are open. Five are for four-year terms. One is for a two-year term.

The four-year seats are Zone 1, Holley, held by Chanz Keeney; Zone 2, Liberty, held by Jenny Daniels; Zone 5, at large, held by Jason Van Eck; Zone 7, at large, held by Redick; and Zone 8, at large, held by Adams.

Adams was recently appointed to fill his current seat when Nick Augsburger moved out of the district and resigned. The term for that position was scheduled to expire this year.

Brown’s position was for a two-year term because the board appointed her following the May 2015 election. Linn County had three Debra Browns at the time and was unable to declare the current member of the board as the winner. At the next board meeting, the board appointed her to the seat. Appointments remain in effect until the next election, and the winner of the election serves until the end of what should have been the term of service.

The deadline to file for one of the positions is 5 p.m. March 16.

The district Board of Directors is composed of nine publicly elected community members. The School Board sets district policy to meet student needs and requirements, to remain compliant with federal, state and local laws; and to maintain fiscal responsibility. The School Board also hires and supervises the superintendent, who is responsible for running day-to-day district operations and oversee staff.

Regular board meetings are usually held on the second Monday of each month in the Board Room of the Administrative Offices at 1920 Long St.

Board Meetings routinely start at 6:30 p.m. and are open to the public unless otherwise provided by law. Special meetings, also open to the public, are held when board members need to examine specific issues more thoroughly.

Candidates must have lived for at least one year within the zone for which they are running. They must be registered voters.

Applications must be sent to the Linn County Clerk, 300 Fourth Ave. SW, Albany, OR 97321.

The application, Form SEL 190, may be found online at sos.oregon.gov/elections/Documents/SEL190.pdf.
