App highlights pioneering women

Learn about outstanding women in Albany history with Oregon’s first “Pioneering Women History Stop” interactive tour, now live on the free Albany Explorer app, available on Google Play and at the App Store.

The tour celebrates Women’s History Month and was created in partnership with the Albany Regional Museum, Albany Visitors Association and HospitalityVision, a local women-owned app development company, with a grant from the Oregon Cultural Trust.

Profiles include Mae Yih, Ore-gon’s first Asian woman state representative; Bessie Hale, Albany’s first African-American female business owner; Oral Harkness Buhl, a nationally known Chautauqua performer; Evelyn Nicholas Burleson Whitaker Waldren, a flight instructor and one of the first women in the nation to earn a pilot’s license; Captain Minnie Mae Mossman Hill, one of the country’s first female steamboat captains; and Esther Nebergall Ferguson, the first female Albany Chamber of Commerce president.

Tbe app features interactive tours of the city’s four historic districts, information about Linn County’s covered bridges, and more, including local shopping and dining experiences.

It will be promoted at all Albany hotels, many local businesses and at the Albany Visitors Association’s information kiosk at the Santiam Rest Area north of Albany on Interstate 5.

The signs have QR codes that can be scanned to access a video about that location and the pioneering woman to whom it relates, including a link to a complete interactive tour map available on the Albany Explorer App.
