Chili and movie for

SHHS ski club

Watch a classic ski movie, make and indulge in some top-quality chili, and support the Sweet Home High School Ski and Ride Club at its annual Chili Cook-Off from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in the school’s Commons area, 1641 Long St.

Come dressed in your 1980s attire to kick off the season with Warren Miller’s classic 1985 movie “Steep and Deep.” There will be prizes for the best outfits.

Admission is $7, which covers movie admission, chili tasting and one raffle ticket for door prizes. Bring a family of four for $25. Doors open at 6 p.m., movie starts at 6:15 and silent auction ends after intermission, around 7 p.m.

Cost to enter the Chili Cook-off is $10. The winner selected by the judges will receive two lift tickets to Hoodoo. Popular vote winner will receive four Hoodoo Autobahn tickets.

Silent auction items include a season pass to Hoodoo, Oregon Jamboree tickets, a unit of lumber, a load of bark dust, wood pellets and rocks, along with gift baskets and certificates from local businesses.

Book sale starting

in Brownsville

Brownsville Friends of the Library will host their annual Book Sale beginning at 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 6, at 146 Spaulding Ave.

The sale runs through Saturday, Dec. 14, during normal library hours – Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursdays from 1 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Genealogical group Christmas lunch

Celebrate the Christmas holidays with members of the Linn Genealogical Society at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, at the Albany Public Library Meeting Room, 2450 14th Ave. SE.

Bring a favorite finger food for a buffet lunch and share about events you’ve experienced or items you’ve found during 2019. This is an opportunity to get better acquainted with other genealogy enthusiasts and ask questions about anything you’re stuck on – and maybe win a door prize.

Kids Store gifts

needed by Saturday

Gifts are being collected through Saturday, Dec. 7, for this year’s Kids Free Christmas Store, to be held Dec. 14 at Sweet Home Evangelical Church (see page 6).

The event gives Sweet Home children 12 years and under a chance to shop for the families they live with. Last year nearly 200 children were able to give out 800 gifts after shopping for their family members at the event.

New, unwrapped gifts (under $10) are needed for all ages and genders, baby through senior adults.

Local symphony concert Dec. 7-8

Willamette Valley Symphony will perform works by Chadwick, Barber and Hanson beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, and at 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 8, at Ashbrook Independent School, 4045 Research Way, Corvallis.

Soloist Laura Aguero will perform Hanson’s Symphony No. 2, “Romantic.” Also on the program are Chadwick’s “Symphonic Sketches – Jubilee,” and Barber’s “Knoxville: Summer of 1915.”

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors 65 and over and students, and free at the door for children 12 and under. Discounts are available for season packages (five concerts).

Gardening class on dry landscaping

The next Lebanon Second Monday Lunchtime Gardening Series class is from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 9, at The Lobby, 661 S. Main St.

District meeting

The Linn Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its annual dinner and members meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Training Center, 525 N. Santiam Hwy..

The meeting is open to the public. Linn County Roadmaster Darrin Lane will be the keynote speaker.

Women’s dinner has holiday theme

After 5 Connection for women will hold a “Candy Cane Christmas” dinner and a special program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at The Lobby, 661 S. Main St., in Lebanon.

All women are invited.

Celebrate the season with the traditional festive Christmas carol sing-a-long, a terrific dinner, and a creative Christmas story with audience participation in a fun-filled game, complete with many prizes and gifts.

Guest speaker Mary Jane Battista, from Astoria, will tell her story of rejection turned to a life of hope, where impossibilities became possibilities. Battista was a Navy wife for 20 years, and is a retired nurse and children’s author.

Cost is $10 and reservations are requested.

Cancer fundraiser Dec. 14 at salon

A fundraiser for a local resident who is battling cancer will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 14, at Epic Salon, 1135 Long St.

All money raised from haircuts will be donated to Michelle Anderson, a local single mother who has been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer, which has spread to other organs. Doctors say nothing can be done at this point.

Funds raised will go toward helping Anderson’s family during the holiday season, as she is unable to work.

Tickets for a raffle for a one-hour massage will be on sale for $3 each.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Dec. 6, is herbed chicken patty sandwich with barbecue sauce or sloppy joe, both on a bun, baked beans, German potato salad and carmel apple pudding.

The menu on Monday, Dec. 9, is sweet and sour chicken with brown rice or beef tomato macaroni, green peas, creamy coleslaw, French roll and spiced applesauce.

The menu on Tuesday, Dec. 10, is turkey salad or ham salad sandwich half, both on wheat bread, cream of broccoli soup, carrot raisin salad and peaches.
