to talk about China
Former teacher Allan Buzzard will speak on “China Today: A Peek at the Breakneck Pace of Modernization and Reflections from an American Tourist’s Month-long Travels within China” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Brownsville Library’s Kirk Room, 146 Spaulding Ave.
Buzzard will join Don Lyon to share about their journey to China this summer. Lyon, a photographer, will share photos and videos depicting China’s high-speed rail system, nomadic minorities, regional delicacies, and the Kazakh culture, lifestyle, and the diverse landscape in China’s far northwest province of Xinjiang.

African Children’s
Choir Dec. 14
The African Children’s Choir will perform at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 14, at Sweet Home High School, 1641 Long St.
The performance is free, but donations are appreciated. The program will include lively African songs and dances, well-loved children’s songs, traditional spirituals and gospel favorites.
Performances support African Children’s Choir programs, such as education, care and relief and development. Music for Life (The parent organization for The African Children’s Choir) works in the African countries of Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, and South Africa. MFL has educated over 52,000 children and impacted the lives of over 100,000 people through its relief and development programs during its history.
The local performance is sponsored by Cornerstone Fellowship church of Sweet Home.
Elks essay contest
deadline Dec. 15
The Order of the Elks sponsors an essay contest for students in fifth to eighth grade. Essay length is not to exceed 300 words, on the theme “What makes you proud of America.”
Entries must be typed or written in ink and submitted by the entrant at the Elks Lodge #1972, at 440 Osage St. by Dec. 15.
Participants must identify name, grade, school, and Elks Lodge number on the essay.

Meals on Wheels
weekly menu
Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Dec. 14, is chicken with supreme sauce or roast pork with gravy, whipped potatoes, capri blend vegetables, wheat bread and zucchini brownie.
The menu on Monday, Dec. 17, is chicken alfredo pasta bake or western pork stew, zucchini with red peppers, spinach Romaine salad, seven grain roll and seasonal fresh fruit.
The menu on Tuesday, Dec. 18, is a Christmas special: shoyu chicken or baked ham with orange glaze, whipped sweet potatoes, Scandinavian blend veggies, cracked wheat bread and pineapple peach crisp.
Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
