Shop with a Cop

deadline closes in

The deadline to apply for Sweet Home Police Department’s annual Shop With A Cop kids program is Nov. 28.

The event will be held Saturday, Dec. 8, at Bi-Mart in Sweet Home.

SHPD is also accepting applications for its Teen Sharing Tree. Children must be 4-12 years of age for SWAC and 13-18 for the Teen Tree, be enrolled in and actively attending school and be a resident within the Sweet Home School District.

The number of applicants for Shop With A Cop Event is limited; there is no limit on Teen Tree applications. Deadline for applications will be Wednesday, Nov. 28.

Elks essay contest for school children

The Order of the Elks sponsors an essay contest for students in fifth to eighth grade.

Essays, limited to no more than 300 words, should be on the theme “What makes you proud of America.” Must be typed or written in ink and submitted by the entrant at the Elks Lodge 1972, at 440 Osage St.

Participant must identify name, grade, school, and Elks Lodge number on the essay. Entries due by Dec. 15.

Christmas set-up volunteers needed

Organizers of the Christmas celebration in Sweet Home, which begins Dec. 8, need help setting up and taking down Christmas Card displays around town.

The 4- by 8-foot plywood Christmas Cards will be displayed in yards, particularly at churches and businesses, throughout the community.

Thanksgiving by

The Point Nov. 22

The Point Restaurant will have its annual Thanksgiving dinner fund-raiser from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at The Elks Lodge, 440 Osage St.

The community is invited to enjoy a traditional Thanksgiving meal at no cost, but donations will be accepted.

Proceeds benefit the Sweet Home police and fire departments.

Elks holiday

bazaar Saturday

Sweet Home Elks will hold a holiday bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at 440 Osage St.

In addition to crafts and home-based businesses, a bake sale, raffles and concessions, etc., a photo booth featuring Santa will be available at at 1 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Praise in 3D.

talk about history

Meet local author and British historian Debra Brown from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, at Think Brain Candy Books and Tea, 678 Main St., Lebanon.

Brown is president of the M.M. Bennetts Award for Historical Fiction Association, author of two “Jane Austen style” historical novels, and editor of “Castles, Customs, and Kings: True Tales by English Historical Fiction Authors.”

LBCC fall choral

concert Nov. 29

Linn-Benton Community College’s fall choral concert, “A Rose in Winter,” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 29, at LBCC’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

The evening will include performances by LBCC’s award-winning concert and chamber choirs, and LBCC a cappella groups The Sirens and Blue Light Special. 

Choirs are conducted by Raymund Ocampo, director of LBCC Choral Studies, and accompanied by Kristin Rorrer. 

Featured choral works include “Erev Shel Shoshanim,” arranged by Jack Klebanow, “The Rose” by Ola Gjeilo, “Tota Pulchra Es” by Maurice Durufle, and “Ave Maria” by Franz Biebl.

The Special Olympics of Linn County will host a karaoke night from 6 to 8 p.m., Friday, Nov. 30, at WVRC, 1853 West Airway Road, Lebanon.

Genealogists to hold holiday event

Linn Genealogical Society will hold its annual holiday potluck at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Albany Regional Museum, 136 Lyon Street S., Albany.

There will be door prizes and members share what they learned this past year and any trips they have taken. Sharing is not mandatory, but is always a great learning session. A way for members to get better acquainted.

Jingle Bells mile

run/walk Dec. 1

Lebanon Downtown Association hosts its first annual Jingle Bells one mile fun run/walk starting at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Ralston Park.

The event features an ugly sweater contest. Registration costs $10 per person. Kids under 5 walk free. Sign in 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. T-shirts will be available for purchase.

Society Bazaar

Sweet Home Genealogical Society will host its Bazaar, Bake Sale and Grannie’s Attic sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8, at 1223 Kalmia St.

A variety of arts and crafts will be available, as well as second-hand items from Grannie’s Attic, baked goodies, and books for sale.

Opportunities remain for vendors. To reserve a vendor table for $10 to $20, pick up an application at the genealogical society.

Singing Christmas

Tree Dec. 7-9

The 37th annual production of the Sweet Home Singing Christmas Tree, “The Christmas Tree Trail,” is at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9, in the Sweet Home High School auditorium, 1641 Long St.

The performance of a wide variety of favorite carols is free, but donations are accepted.

Auction Dec. 8

The Sweet Home Alumni Foundation is hosting its 15th annual Decorated Tree Auction from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, in the Sweet Home High School cafeteria, 1641 Long St.

This year’s theme is “An Oregon Trail Christmas.” Live, decorated trees, sponsored and designed by businesses and individuals, will be available for bid. A silent auction features holiday gifts, baked goods, handcrafted items and theme baskets.

Cost to attend is $25 per person and includes a holiday dinner buffet and dessert. Proceeds from the tree auction support college scholarships for SHHS graduation seniors. The decorated trees will be on display from 12 to 2 p.m. Dec. 8.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

No meal will be served Friday, Nov. 23, due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

The menu on Monday, Nov. 26, is chicken tetrazzini or sweet and sour pork with brown rice, green peas, spinach Romaine salad, whole wheat roll and spiced peaches.

The menu on Tuesday, Nov. 27, is southwest omelet bake or baked beef rigatoni, country trio vegetables, broccoli raisin salad, herb roll and banana pudding.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
