The Samaritan Lebanon Health Center facility is inviting all employees, patients and the community to participate in a supply drive in October for the Edward C. Allworth Veterans Home.
Items requested by the VA home include: Folgers coffee, back scratchers, art craft kits for people with limited motor functions, matching placemats in increments of 14, microwave popcorn, twin-sized quilts, large-print crossword puzzle books, $5 or $10 gift cards to Walmart or Fred Meyer, individualized snack items like small bags of chips or cookies, name-brand soda, electric razors, CD players, neck pillows and DVD Players with HDMI capability.
The drive will continue through Friday, Nov. 9. Donations can be dropped off with check-in staff on either floor of the facility, located at 675 N 5th Street.

Photographer to
present on France
Local photographer and traveller Don Lyon will present a program on the southeast corner of France, known as La Belle Provence.
Lyon will present from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 18, at the Lebanon Public Library, 55 Academy St.
La Belle Provence is known for azure skies, orderly olive groves, beautiful stone cottages with painted shutters and much more. Lyon will take participants on a tour of the area, with photographs of lavender fields and acres of vineyards, scattered with history of the area.

Best-selling author
to speak at library
Sweet Home Public Library hosts best-selling author Andra Watkins at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the library, 1101 13th Ave.
Watkins is the only living person to walk the 444-mile Natchez Trace in 2014. For 34 days she walked the trail to launch her debut novel, “To Live Forever: An Afterlife Journey of Meriwether Lewis,” but ended up having a life-changing adventure with her 80-year-old father.
Her best-selling memoir, “Not Without My Father” is about making memories, and turning “I wish I had” into “I’m glad I did.” Her presentation challenges audiences to evaluate their relationships, and provides concrete ideas and strategies on how to make memories that matter.

Foster Dam Road
closures this week
The road over Foster Dam will be closed to all vehicle and pedestrian traffic from 8 a.m. through 4:30 p.m. through Friday, Oct. 19.
The closure will allow for installation of fish research equipment and evaluation of downstream passage for fish.

Medical students
to present research
Western COMP-Northwest medical students will present research they have completed over the last year at 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the medical school, 200 Mullins Drive.
At the annual Research Symposium, students will present research on a wide variety of health-related topics, including how environmental chemicals affect early human brain development; how community education promotes healthy eating; how doctors know about an excessive sweating disorder; improving understanding of a parasitic disease in Africa; and much, much more.
The event is free and open to the public.
Plastic models swap meet Oct. 20
Love models?
The Oregon Veterans Home will host a Plastic Model Kit/Collector Swap Meet and Model Contest from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at 600 N. 5th St., Lebanon.
Plastic model kits of all kinds – planes, cars, military and everything in between – will be available for sale, trade, etc. Vendor tables are also available. A People’s Choice model contest will be held in which anyone can enter and everybody votes. Plaques will be awarded to the top three winners. Coffee and donuts will be available while they last.

Learn to garden despite disabilities
Learn techniques and strategies for gardening with disabilities from noon to 12:50 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, at the Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center.
For those with back, knee or arthritis pain, gardening is possible with the right tools and access.

Pet-themed art sought for contest
Sweet Home Beautification will hold a work party beginning at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 11th Avenue and Main Street, next to Key Bank.
Any necessary tools and vests will be provided.

Safe driving course
for seniors offered
A Safe Driving class for seniors will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at the Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St.
The class is particularly for older drivers and serves as a refresher course to prevent crashes that occur due to inattention and sloppy driving habits.
Attendees should bring their driver’s license and a sack lunch. Cost is $20, which covers materials used in the class. American Association of Retired Persons members can receive a $5 discount if they bring an AARP membership card.
Oregon law requires insurance companies to offer reduced auto insurance rates to drivers who have a current Safe Driving class receipt, which should more than cover the cost of the class.

The AARP Safe Driving Program is seeking volunteers to conduct the courses. There are currently no instructors in Lebanon or Sweet Home. The class is offered twice a year. Anyone interested in becoming an instructor is encouraged to attend the class and discuss the opportunity.
Class for would-be business owners
Oregon Small Business Development Center hosts a free Going into Business class from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, at Linn-Benton Community College, Lebanon Center, 44 Industrial Way, room LC-222.
Instructor Marlene Peterson will teach basic information needed to begin planning a successful business. Topics include rules, regulations, financing, markets, feasibility and more.

Forum to feature county parks chief
Linn County Parks Director Brian Carroll will speak at the Chamber of Commerce’s Forum Lunch from 11:15 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 26, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Career Training Center

Carroll will discuss the natural resources of the local area.
The menu will be loaded baked potato soup, build-your-own-sandwich bar, tossed salad with dressing, chips and carrot cake.

Historical drama
fund-raiser in Scio
Join the Scio community in “A Tale of Four Scios” historical re-enactment program at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at ZCBJ Hall, 38704 N. Main St. There will also be food and live music.
Scio-area residents are raising funds to acquire and develop a property for the Scio Fairgrounds and Event Center.
Tickets to the event are $35. Bricks can be purchased with your name on it for $75-500. Contributions will be used to procure, develop and enhance the fairgrounds.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Oct. 19, is turkey a la king or braised beef tips, whipped potatoes, country trio vegetables, sunflower seed roll and applesauce gingerbread.
The menu on Monday, Oct. 22, is chicken patty with honey mustard sauce or pork choppie with gravy, whipped sweet potatoes, mixed vegetables, potato wheat roll and spiced peaches.
The menu on Tuesday, Oct. 23, is chicken rice bake or diced pork and penne pasta, country trio vegetables, spinach Romaine salad, oatmeal roll and butterscotch bar.
