Expanded hours

for Art Center

Brownsville Art Center is now open Sundays from 1:30 to 5 p.m.

Hours at the Art Center have expanded to Wednesday afternoons as well, from 1:30 till 5 p.m. These new hours are in addition to the usual hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursdays through Saturdays.

The Art Center features rotating exhibits by local and visiting artists in its gallery space as well as continuous exhibit space for members of the Art Association. It offers gifts and art for all tastes.

Ranger District

closure Thursday

Willamette National Forest offices in Sweet Home will be closed all day Thursday, June 14, for employee training.

Offices will re-open Friday, June 15.

Lacemakers invite

guests on Saturday

Oregon Trail Lacemakers invites guests to join them from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, June 16, 455 Alexander Loop, Eugene, north of Valley River Center.

The group meets monthly to make lace by hand, especially bobbin laces.

Pioneer Picnic this

weekend in B’ville

Linn County Pioneer Picnic, Oregon’s oldest continuing cele-bration, will be held this weekend, June 15-17, in Brownsville.

The Picnic, which started in 1887 as a reunion of Oregon Trail pioneers, includes all manner of free family fun, including parades, a spelling bee, performances, a Wagon Train Breakfast, a horseshoe tournament, a soccer tournament, the Pioneer Dam Run on Sunday, a talent show, flower show, a pie eating contest and a loggers jamboree and more.

at Farmers Market

String Theory will perform Tuesday, June 19, at the Sweet Home Farmers Market in the square at 12th and Kalmia in front of City Hall.

The event runs from 2 to 6 p.m. and features local vendors purveying all manner of local produce and wares. Musical performers are scheduled to appear each week at the market, which is scheduled to run throughout the summer.

Joint replacement

Learn about joint replacement from orthopedic surgeon Kelli Baum, DO, in a free seminar from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 N Santiam Hwy, Conference Room B and C.

Dr. Baum will cover joint health, surgical and non-surgical options to relieve pain, joint replacement and how to get back to being active.

Food preservation

classes offered

Oregon State University Extension Service is offering a selection of hands-on food preservation classes to help community members learn to preserve fresh, local produce for year-round enjoyment.

Preserving Fruits and Fruit Products will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, at the Linn County Extension Office on Highway 34 (33630 McFarland Road, Tangent).

These classes are appropriate for both novice food preservers and those with experience who hope to update their skills and knowledge. Participants share products made in class. 

The class will include an introduction to food preservation, review basic techniques and equipment for boiling water canning used to preserve fruits and fruit products such as pie fillings, jams, jellies and juices.

Preserve fruit products in class to practice boiling-water canning techniques.

Pre-registration is required because of limited class size.  Cost is $18 per class or $60 for four classes if taken during the summer.

All ingredients and supplies are included.

Guide dogs to be

vision group topic

Guide Dogs for blind and low-vision people will be the topic of the June meeting of the Mid Valley Low Vision Support Groupat 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 20, at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Andrea Barnhurst will have her service dog, Bali, with her. Barnhurst, who is severely visually impaired, will tell how to receive a guide dog, how she and Bali were trained together as a team, the benefits that Bali has given to her as a companion and what her responsibilities are for being the owner of a guide dog.

The meeting is free.  All are welcome to attend.  Light refreshments are served.

fund-raiser June 19

A chicken dinner, silent auction and raffle drawing to raise funds for roof repairs for the Jim Riggs Community Center will held at 6 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at 880 18th Ave.

The menu includes a quarter of a grilled chicken, roasted red potatoes with garlic and onions, green or baked beans, rolls and dessert.

Trails group plans

hike on June 23

Sweet Home Trails will host a hike to Cone Peak (Tombstone Pass) Saturday, June 23.

The out-and-back hike will be 3 miles, with a 6.1-mile loop available to those who are feeling more ambitious. The hike has elevation gain but will be not particularly strenuous and is kid-friendly. The pace will be slow. Hiking shoes and hiking sticks are recommended for stability if needed. 

Bring backpack with a lunch, plenty of water and a camera if you want to capture the beautiful flowers.

Meet at 8:30 a.m. at the Sweet Home Ranger District parking lot, 4690 Highway 20. Departure will be at 9 a.m. from the ranger station. For those who want to drive up individually, the plan is to be at the trailhead, 34 miles east of Sweet Home on Highway 20, about 10 a.m.

LBCC offers farm

machinery training

Tractor and Farm Machinery Safety training will be held at Linn-Benton Community College’s Albany campus starting Thursday, June 28.

Geared for farm workers ages 14 to 18, the course is developed and operated with the assistance of the OSU Extension Service in accordance with federal regulations.

The three-day class session will meet June 28-30, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:50 p.m.  Classes meet on the LBCC Albany campus, Forum building room F-113, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW.

Preregistration is required and students must be at least 14 to register. Students and parents must sign a Liability Waiver/Indemnification form at the time of registration.

Cost for this non-credit class is $99.

Patriotic concert

June 30 at SHHS

The Willamette Valley Concert Band will present a Patriotic Pops Concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, June 30, at the Sweet Home High School auditorium.

The concert, billed as a “Potpourri of Music,” features a wide variety of music including Broadway show tunes, big band swing favorites, patriotic music and traditional marches.

Patriotic selections will include “Land of Liberty,” a medley of well-known American patriotic songs, arranged by John Wasson.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, June 15, is a Father’s Day special menu of roast turkey with gravy or pork ribbett with barbecue sauce, Chantilly potatoes, succotash, squash bread and ice cream cup.

The menu on Monday, June 18, is chicken lo mein or beef enchilada bake, whole kernel corn, marinated broccoli salad, multigrain roll and rocky road pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, June 19, is lima beans and turkey ham or spaghetti with meat sauce, country trio blend vegetables, spinach Romaine salad, cornmeal roll and hermit bar.
