Hands-on learning

for pre-teens

Sweet Home Public Library will host Mechanisms, a hands-on learning activity, from 2:30 to 4 p.m. on the first Wednesday of every month until June at the Sweet Home Public Library, 1101 13th Ave.

Ward Christman will teach about simple machines, energy collection and storage, electricity, parts of computers and how they work and more. All supplies are provided.

Sign ups and regular attendance are required. This activity is recommended for third- through fifth-graders.

Foster Dam Road

closed until May 2

The road over Foster Dam will be closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily, including weekends, through Wednesday, May 2.

This closure will allow fish biologists to evaluate the effectiveness of the new fish weir through a fish survival study.

On May 2, the weir and lake water level will be raised to summer elevation.

Fund-raiser bingo

for needy Thursday

Love Thy Neighbor Services will hold a Bingo Night fund-raiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, starting April 12, at Home Sweet Home Cafe, 1333 Main St.

A limited menu will be available. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s outreach efforts, which include a youth program, outdoor school and a community garden.

Learn all about

herbs and vinegar

Learn to grow fresh herbs and make flavored vinegar at a free presentation from 10 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 26, at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St.

OSU Extension Service Horticulture faculty will discuss how to successfully start and grow fresh herbs in your home garden or containers, including herbs that do well in this area and best conditions for growth will be shared.

Food Preservation faculty will demonstrate how to make flavored vinegar using herbs, fruits and spices and ideas for using the infused vinegar.

Class to explore

Indian life in area

Explore the life ways of the Santiam/Kalapuya Indians prior to the arrival of Caucasians in two free classes offered April 30 and May 2 at Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center, room 101, 1661 Long St.

The first class meets from 1 to 2:50 p.m. Monday, April 30. Learn the pre-history of the people of Western Oregon, including archaeological evidence, early settler accounts and Kalapuya-era replica artifacts.

The second class is a field trip to Cascadia Cave from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Cascadia State Park, where the class will examine traditional cultural resource areas and discuss restoration opportunities.

These classes are free, but students must supply their own transportation to Cascadia State Park, and bring their own lunch and water, and wear field appropriate clothing.

Health and Safety

Fair May 2 at LBCC

A Health and Safety Fair will be held at Linn-Benton Community College from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, May 2, at 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany, in the college courtyard.

Information tables include local safety, health and wellness companies and organizations, bike clubs, emergency planning organizations, ham radio demonstration, K-9 demonstration, college health and safety programs, and college clubs.

A courtyard lunch will be available for $5, or $4 for students. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the LBCC Safety Office at (541) 917-4440.

Free pre-diabetes

class at hospital

East Linn County residents diagnosed with pre-diabetes or similar conditions can benefit from a free eight-week class at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

The hospital’s Diabetes Education team will begin its next Diabetes Prevention class from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 Santiam Hwy.

The class will run every Wednesday for eight weeks, concluding June 20.

Topics include weight loss, healthy eating, exercise and other lifestyle changes that will help people avoid a diagnosis of diabetes.

In addition, the hospital’s diabetes team facilitates a monthly support group for anyone diagnosed with diabetes, pre-diabetes or similar conditions. The group meets the first Monday of every month – unless the first Monday is a holiday.

The next group meeting will be from 11 a.m. to noon Monday, May 7, at the hospital. The topic will be proper footware for diabetics.

Pre-registration is required for the Diabetes Prevention class and the support group. Participants are encouraged to complete the Diabetes Prevention class before joining the support group, but it’s not required.

National Day of

Prayer May 3

Hillside Fellowship will host a service for the National Day of Prayer from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday, May 3, at 501 Nandina St.

Organizers invite residents to pray at the following times and locations earlier in the day: 7:30 a.m. at the Sweet Home School District Office, 1920 Long St; 12 p.m. at City Hall, 1140 12th Ave .; 2 p.m. at the Chamber of Commerce, 1575 Main St .; and 5 p.m. at the Sweet Home Police Department, 1950 Main St.

Star Wars fun in Lebanon May 4

The Lebanon Library will host a “May the Fourth Be With You” Star Wars day from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, May 4, at 55 Academy St.

The event will include “Star Wars” – themed crafts, games and a movie, plus drawings and refreshments.

A costume contest will be held. Participants are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite “Star Wars” character or object.

Culture Night

May 4 at LBCC

LBCC’s International Culture Night will be held starting at 6 p.m. Friday, May 4, at the college’s Russell Tripp Theater, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

The event starts with cultural activities and food samplings from around the world, and proceeds with performances that include a fashion show with traditional clothing from many countries, singing, magic, martial arts, dancing and performances on a variety of instruments, including piano and Chinese flute.

Rock identification

East Linn Museum will hold a Rock Identification Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at 746 Long St.

The collection includes petrified wood, agates, thunder eggs, jasper, and more. Geologist Robert Rose will be available to identify visitors’ rocks.

Cinco de Mayo

Lebanon Square Circlers will hold a square dance celebrating Cinco de Mayo from 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the Lebanon IOOF Hall, 20 E. Ash St.

Charlotte Jeskey will be calling and Jackie Gale will be cueing. Tacos will be served at break.

Cost is $5 per person, or $10 for a family of three or more. The public is invited to watch, enjoy the music and eat tacos for free.

B&G Club Spring Auction May 5

The Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Santiam will hold its Spring Auction from 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday, May 5, at the club headquarters, 305 S. 5th St. in Lebanon.

Sponsored by Bender Mechanical Services, the event helps fund services supported by the club.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, April 27, is Italian herb chicken patty or homestyle pork patty, both with gravy, whipped potatoes, carrots, seven grain bread and zucchini brownie.

The menu on Monday, April 30, is baked beef rigatoni or ham and scalloped potatoes, green beans, creamy coleslaw, cracked wheat roll and apple crisp.

The menu on Tuesday, May 1, is chicken lo mein or spinach strata, broccoli, garden vegetable salad, whole wheat dinner roll and peaches.
