Friday at Expo
The Linn County Republican Party will hold a Spring Gala at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Willamette Conference Center at the Linn County Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Rd., Albany.
“Politics is funny business,” featuring Loren Spivak, a free market warrior, comedian and economist.
There will be a silent auction, prime rib dinner and no host bar.
Tickets are $50 per person, $90 per couple, or sponsor a table of eight for $360 (prices good through April 1).
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner served at 6:30 p.m.

Real estate office
collecting diapers
The Gregory Home Team is collecting donations of diapers and wipes for the Family Tree Relief Nursery through the month of April.
The real estate office will have a drop box at 401 Main St., Suite A.
The Albany office will host an event from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 2125 Pacific Blvd., with a goal of filling its trailer full of donations. Each item donated earns a raffle ticket for a $100 gift card.
Family Tree Relief Nursery, formed in 2004, is a child abuse and neglect prevention program offering free services to low income families with children under the age of 6, supporting family stability and working with children and parents to minimize the need for children to be removed from their home. Its services include a therapeutic classroom and nursery, an outreach program and respite, home visitation, parent education and support.

Starker forestry lecture at OSU
The annual Starker Lectures at Oregon State University will explore the future of forestry and how land managers, policy makers and communities ought to prepare for decisions that could shape generations.
The series – “What’s next: The future of managing for healthy productive forests” – will ask leading thinkers to consider the economic, political, technological and ecological future of forestry and discuss how to meet new challenges that are on the horizon.
All lectures are free and open to the public and will be held in the C&E Hall of the LaSells Stewart Center on the OSU campus.
Carlton Owen, president and CEO of the U.S. Endowment for Forestry and Communities, will speak on “Working with Nature – The Century of Forests and Forest Products,” at 3:30 p.m. on April 25.

Forum to focus on pain management
Kevin Curraco will speak about pain management in the community at the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce’s monthly Forum Lunch from 11:15 to 1 p.m. Friday, April 27, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital Career Training Center, 525 N. Santiam Hwy.
Curraco, a Samaritan physical therapist, will talk about opioids and other pain management options for those suffering from chronic pain.
Cost is $15 per person and RSVPs are required. The menu is slow roasted pot roast, baby bakers, veggies, tossed salad with dressing, rolls and butter, and caramel apple dessert.

Learn perspective
in B’ville art class
The Brownsville Art Association will present “Introduction to Perspective for Drawing and Painting” from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 27, and from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday, April 28, at the Art Center, 255 N. Main St., Brownsville.
This workshop will help artists with the basic structure of any drawing or painting in relation to perspective. This class is also good for those interested in architectural drawing.
The instructor will be Cassandra Schumacher, a Sweet Home High School graduate and professional graphic novelist and illustrator.
Only a maximum of 25 students are allowed, so register early. The $75 fee includes a non-refundable $5 pre-registration fee; balance is due at first class (please arrive early to complete registration). Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, April 20, is garden chicken or turkey club mini salad on spinach Romaine, cream of broccoli soup, rye bran roll and spiced peaches.
The menu on Monday, April 23, is chicken divan with rice or spaghetti with meat sauce, green beans, spinach Romaine salad, oat bran roll and spiced applesauce.
The menu on Tuesday, April 24, is broccoli omelet bake or pork sausage gravy, Sandinavian blend vegetables, garden vegetable salad, biscuit and rice pudding.

Explore the life ways of the Santiam/Kalapuya Indians prior to the arrival of Caucasians invasion in two free classes offered April 30 and May 2 at Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center, room 101, 1661 Long St.
The first class meets from 1 to 2:50 p.m. Monday, April 30. Learn the pre-history of the people of Western Oregon, including archaeological evidence, early settler accounts and Kalapuya-era replica artifacts.
The second class is a field trip to Cascadia Cave from 10 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. Wednesday, May 2, at Cascadia State Park, where the class will examine traditional cultural resource areas and discuss restoration opportunities.

A three-week safe driver refresher class is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College from 6 to 7:20 p.m., on Mondays, starting May 7, at the LBCC Albany Campus, Takena Hall, room T-215.
The course covers the new “Move Over Law,” which includes more than just emergency vehicles. Review recent changes in the law and learn skills and techniques to reduce crashes and collisions.
This three-week class meets Mondays from Included will be a unique hands-on experience from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 19 that provides an opportunity to challenge yourself in distracted driving situations.
Students must be 16 or older to attend. Cost is $79; materials included.

Personal Computer Essentials I, a four-week class for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on instruction, will be offered on four Thursdays, beginning May 10, at Linn-Benton Community College Sweet Home Center, 1661 Long St.
Designed to progress at an easy pace, the class includes identifying various parts of the computer, on/off control, and use of mouse and keyboard. It introduces Windows 10, with a brief intro to email and the Internet. Attendance at the first class is important. Cost is $65.

The Linn County Extension Service offers two LCEA Legacy Scholarships of $1,000 annually. The scholarship is based on residency in the geographical areas served by Linn County Extension, the applicant’s financial need, GPA of 2.75 or higher, involvement in 4-H or other Extension programs, and community involvement and/or work experience.
