Bingo fund-raiser

to help local poor

Love Thy Neighbor Services will hold a Bingo Night fund-raiser from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, starting April 12, at Home Sweet Home Cafe, 1333 Main St.

A limited menu will be available. Proceeds will benefit the organization’s outreach efforts to local needy people, which include a youth program, outdoor school and a community garden.

Land stewardship class starts April 12

The South Santiam Watershed Council and Willamette National Forest will hold a free Stewardship Contracting workshop from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday, April 12, starting at Best Western, 1100 Price Road SE in Albany

Stewardship contracting is one of the newer management tools used by national forests which allows federal agencies to keep timber revenue local and be reinvested into local roads and service work.

An afternoon field trip will be to the Rock Think stewardship area on the Siuslaw National Forest. Transportation and food will be provided.

Squarenaders

gospel music dance

Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a Gospel Music Square Dance starting at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Oak Heights School Gym, 6th and Elm.

Caller will be Jim Voll, with Jackie Gale cueing round dances.

The Plus starts at 7:30, followed by the main dance from 8 to 10. A pot luck will be held at the break.

Suggested donation is $5 for adults, $4 for youths. Spectators, who are welcome, are free.

Watercolors class

starts Saturday

“A Solid Start in Watercolor II” DVD series will be presented by Alice Tetamore from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for five consecutive Saturdays starting April 14, at the Brownsville Art Center, 255 N. Main St.

Class size is limited to a maximum of six spaces. A full materials list is available at the Art Center. You do not need to have done the first series if you have some basic experience with watercolors already. Also, 140-pound cold press watercolor paper will be provided for class paintings and for the small practice paintings included in the instructions.

Valley symphony this weekend

Willamette Valley Symphony will perform two concerts this weekend.

The program includes Piano Concerto No. 5 by Saint-Saens, with Matthew Goodrich performing; Sibelius’ “The Swan of Tuonela” and Brahms’ Symphony No. 3.

Concerts are at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 14, at Albany First United Methodist Church, 1115 28th Ave. SW, and Sunday, April 15, at 4 p.m. at LaSells Stewart Center at Oregon State University.

Driver permit preparation classes are being offered through LBCC Community Education in Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon starting April 16.

These two-week sessions will be available in Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon: on Mondays from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. starting Monday, April 16 at the LBCC Albany Campus; on Thursdays from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. starting Thursday, May 3 at the LBCC Benton Center, Corvallis; and Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:20 p.m. starting Tuesday, May 8 at the LBCC Lebanon Center.

Flower arranging

classes from LBCC

New classes to help you learn flower arranging are being offered at Linn-Benton Community College’s Lebanon Center.

Floral Swag class covers designing and assembling a classic holiday swag and a swag for interior decoration. This two-week class meets Tuesdays from 6 to 7:50 p.m. starting April 24 at the LBCC Lebanon Center.  Cost is $49.

Table Top Arrangements class covers how to create beautiful floral arrangements using different types of materials including flowers and greens. This two-week class meets Tuesdays from 6 to 7:50 p.m. starting May 8 at the LBCC Lebanon Center. Cost is $59.

Barnhart to hold

town hall meeting

Rep. Phil Barnhart will host a town hall meeting at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 18, at Randy’s Main St. Coffee, 240 N. Main St., Brownsville.

The meeting gives residents of House District 11 a chance to engage with their state representative, learn about what happened during the brief legislative session last month, and give their feedback about the issues of the day.

Barnhart represents residents of southern Linn County, including the Crawfordsville area.

Abuse prevention paint night benefit

Linn County Child Abuse Network will host a paint night fund-raiser from 6 to 9 pm. Friday, April 13, at Appletree Restaurant, 1890 S. Main St., Lebanon.

Proceeds will benefit Family Tree Relief Nursery.

Deaf and blind

woman to speak

The Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group has scheduled a deaf and blind person to provide the program for its next meeting at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, at the Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Donna Brooks, an inspirational and informative speaker, will share her challenges of living in a world made for people with sight and hearing. With her will be a special assistant to interpret her story as Donna tells it.

The Mid Valley Low Vision Support group is a self-funded, nonprofit organization which is open to anyone to attend. There are no memberships and every meeting is free to attend. Light refreshments are served.

Landlord training

offered in Salem

Salem Police Department is offering a two-day workshop in landlord training from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18, and Thursday, April 19 at Chemeketa Community College, 4000 Lancaster Dr. NE.

The workshop is designed to teach participants about state laws and local ordinances that affect rental properties, how to reduce crime in and around rental properties, as well as how to establish and maintain a stable rental environment.

Register on or before April 11 and pay the reduced price of $65 per person, or $85 per couple; postmarks count. After April 11, the fee increases to $75 and $95, respectively. Registration includes reference materials and refreshments.

Linn County GOP Spring Gala April 20

The Linn County Republican Party will hold a Spring Gala at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 20, in the Willamette Conference Center at the Linn County Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road, Albany.

“Politics is funny business,” featuring Loren Spivak, a free market warrior, comedian and economist. There will be a silent auction, prime rib dinner and no host bar.

Tickets are $50 per person, $90 per couple, or sponsor a table of eight for $360 (prices good through April 1). Doors open at 5:30 p.m., dinner served at 6:30 p.m.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, April 13, is sliced turkey with gravy or breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce, sour cream with chive potatoes, green peas with onions, rye bran bread and poke ’n pour cake.

The menu on Monday, April 16, is lemon herb chicken breast or country fried steak with gravy, whipped potatoes, mixed vegetables, wheat bread and fresh orange.

The menu on Tuesday, April 17, is shaved turkey or meatloaf sandwich half on wheat bread, six bean soup, broccoli raisin salad, pineapple and Dijonnaise sauce.
