The American Red Cross reports lower than usual donations of blood and platelets due to widespread flu and severe winter weather across the U.S. this year.
The Red Cross asks residents to consider making an appointment for one of its blood drives in the area.
There will be two blood drives in Lebanon: from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 21 at LDS, 1955 5th St .; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24 at Mega Foods, 1950 Main St.

Baby Blast ‘shower’ to promote services
Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital will present its sixth annual Baby Blast “baby shower” with free health checks for babies, as well as prizes and snacks, from 1 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 22, in conference rooms A-D.
The free drop-in celebration will help new parents learn what resources are available to them in east Linn County and give them an opportunity to meet representatives from many services in Lebanon and Sweet Home, including birthing, childhood education, childhood recreation and health services opportunities, parental help, and much more.

Cello performance at Lebanon Library
Back by popular demand, the Lebanon Public Library will be hosting a Fireside Concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 24, with Gideon Freudmann’s CelloBop.
Using the electric cello for improvisational classical, blues, jazz, electronic, funk and folk music, Freudmann performs improvisational riffs on conventions and traditions. He loops and layers his sounds with pedals and amplifiers, sculpting orchestras out of thin air.
Class on pantry, freezer foods
Oregon State University Extension Master Food Preservers will offer a class on how to best utilize the foods in your pantry and freezer from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at the Community of Christ Church, 1385 Gilham Road in Eugene.
Master Food Preservers will share ideas and tricks to help you save money on your food bills while eating healthier and avoiding waste. Also, learn what to keep on hand for making quick meals every day.

Genealogists to talk wills, probate
“Researching wills and probate records” will be presented at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, March 3 at the Albany Historical Carousel.
Wills and probate records provide many clues to genealogical research, as well as providing the researcher an insight into their family members. These records can help in locating family members and then connecting them to your family. Come hear how to get these records and how to look for the clues in them.
Speaker Gladys Seifert grew up in Linn County, graduating from Albany Union High School in 1960. Today she and her husband, Gale, live in the Shedd area. Starting at a young age, Seifert was always interested in her family history and always asked her family lots of questions.

CERT training
classes in March
Linn County Community Emergency Response Team will offer classes in preparing for emergencies from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, March 3 to 4, and March 10 to 11 at the Sweet Home Police Department’s training room, 1950 Main St.
CERT’s goal is to help prepare and train our community and neighbors to help themselves and their families for any emergency including earthquakes, storms, and floods. It offers training in disaster preparedness and emergency response to anyone with a desire to help others.

Genealogists to hold workshop
The Sweet Home Genealogical Society will be having its 38th annual Genealogy Workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 9 to Saturday, March 10.
The workshop includes eight classes and six different speakers.
Workshop fee is dependent on number of days attending, and whether registrant is a member of SHGS. Early bird registration by March 1 entitles registrants to a discounted rate. A&W, Mr. Lucky’s Deli and All Star Pizza are giving away $1 off coupons to those attending the workshop.

Health careers day for teens March 10
Local teens are invited to participate in the Lebanon Health Career Ladder from 8:45 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, March 10, at COMP-NW, 200 Mullins Drive.
The free event is one of a series of free Saturday Academies in which COMP-Northwest clinicians, scientists, medical students, and our community partners engage the whole family in science activities to educate and build skills and confidence for students from Lebanon and surrounding communities in grades 6-10.
The goal is to provide opportunities for students to create, explore, and develop college and career goals and objectives.
Others will be held March 10 and April 21.
All sessions are held at COMP-Northwest in Lebanon. Lunch is provided for all attending. Adult accompaniment of students is required as participation from parents, guardians or designated adults is a vital part of the experience.

A free monthly gardening talk sponsored by the Linn County Master Gardeners and the Lebanon Garden Club will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, March 12, at The Lobby, 661 S Main St.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The menu on Friday, Feb. 23, is chicken and white bean chili or zucchini lasagna, tossed salad, herb carrots, French bread and frosted orange cake.
The menu on Monday, Feb. 26, is Swedish meatballs or garlic chicken, delmonico potatoes, broccoli, bran wheat bread and cherry whip.
The menu on Tuesday, Feb. 27, is roast turkey with gravy or baked ham with orange glaze, whipped sweet potatoes, spinach, cornmeal bread and seasonal fresh fruit.
