Community grant

applications open

The City of Sweet Home is accepting applications for its Community Grants Program until Dec. 31.

The program is offered twice per year. The City Council will make its next set of grants in January.

To apply, complete the city’s application packet and return it to City of Sweet Home, Community Grants Program, 1140 12th Ave., Sweet Home, OR 97386.

Free genealogy

classes offered

Sweet Home Genealogy Society is offering free classes roughly every other week through mid-February.

The Introduction to Genealogy classes are video-based and are held twice on scheduled Mondays, at noon and at 6 p.m. at the Genealogy Library, 1223 Kalmia St. The instructor on the videos is genealogist Dr. John Philip Colletta.

Topics on Dec. 18 will be “Your Ancestors in the County Courthouse” and “Your Ancestors in State Records.”

Upcoming class topics include searching your ancestors’ backyards and assembling an account of your discoveries, and much more.

‘Christmas Carol’

at library Thursday

The Sweet Home Public Library invites you to The Christmas Carol in Prose at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 14, at the Sweet Home Public Library, 1101 13th Ave.

A dramatic recitation of Charles Dickens’ public reading version that he himself performed 124 times! Over 25 distinct characters come to life through vocal characterization. The experience of this timeless and poignant tale is enhanced by the ever-looming presence of the four ghosts in the form of bronze busts created by the artist, Dan Chen.

Live Nativity at

E. Linn Museum

East Linn Museum will stage its Annual Live Nativity and free carriage rides from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16.

Hot chocolate and hot cider will be provided. Inside the museum, check out the bake sale, live music and indoor decorations. The event is free, but donations are accepted.

Free ceramics class

at Albany gallery

Gallery Calapooia will host free art classes led by local artists on Saturdays during the holdiay season at 222 First Ave. in Albany.

Classes will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Dec. 16 class will focus on ceramics. Dennis Johanson will demonstrate how he throws his pots on a wheel and develops his glazes.

Lacemakers invite

new participants

The Oregon Trail Lacemakers invite new participants to meet every third Saturday to make lace by hand including bobbin laces, tatting, needlelace, crochet, and knitted lace.

Join them from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 16 at Willamette Oaks Retirement Living, 455 Alexander Loop, Eugene (north of Valley River Center in Eugene. Guests are welcome.

Hospital offers chronic pain class

The Lebanon Community Hospital is offering a new chronic pain therapy program called Movement, Mindfulness and Pain Science.

The program includes physical activity, such as tai chi and yoga, mental and physical tools to help change the pain experience.

Physical therapists Veronica Moresi and Sharna Prasad lead the program on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Each session is two hours, and patients should expect to be in the program four to eight weeks before graduating.

The next class begins Tuesday, Jan. 9. This program requires a referral from the patient’s primary care provider, as well as a physical therapy evaluation to determine if the program would be right for them.

Master Recycler

Sign-ups for the next Linn and Benton Master Recycler class, to be held on Tuesday nights from Jan. 9 through Feb. 27 at Oregon State University, are under way.

LBCC driving class

begins in January

Registration is now open for Driver Education courses at Linn-Benton Community College.

Classes start the first week of January and will be held in Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon.

Courses include state-mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a one-time parent/student orientation plus 12 hours behind the wheel practice and driver observation.

Cost for the course is $265 for ages 17 and under, $445 for ages 18 and over. Upon successful completion of the course, students under the age of 18 qualify for a car skills testing waiver when obtaining their driver’s license.

for seniors offered

A series of computer classes designed for seniors will be held at Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center starting Jan. 10.

Computer Essentials for Seniors 1 is for those who have never touched a computer before and want hands-on, step-by-step instruction at an easy pace. Learn the various parts of the computer, how to turn on and off, how to use the mouse and keyboard., working with Windows 10 and a brief intro to email and the internet.

This three-week class meets from 6 to 7:50 p.m. on Wednesdays starting Jan. 10 at LBCC’s Lebanon Center, LC-220B, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $59.

Computer Essentials for Seniors 2 builds on beginner skills and covers using the web and internet search engines, e-mail account set-up and use, Facebook use, and tips for keeping your computer safe and virus free.

This three-week class meets Wednesdays from 6 to 7:50 p.m. starting Jan. 31 at the Lebanon Center, LC-220B, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $59.

Computer Essentials for Seniors 3 gives more in-depth instruction, including using CD’s, DVD’s and downloading digital music, streaming videos, uploading, organizing, and editing photos from your phone or camera and sharing photos.

This three-week class meets Mondays from 6 to 7:50 p.m. starting Feb. 21 at the Lebanon Center, LC-220B, 44 Industrial Way. Cost is $59.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

The menu on Friday, Dec. 15, is chicken supreme or roast pork with gravy, whipped potatoes, Capri blend vegetables, bran wheat bread and zucchini brownie.

The menu on Monday, Dec. 18, is chicken alfredo pasta or western pork stew, zucchini with red peppers, spinach Romaine salad, seven grain roll and fresh orange.

The menu on Tuesday, Dec. 19, is shoyu chicken or baked ham with orange glaze, whipped sweet potatoes, Scandanavian blend vegetables, cracked wheat bread and apple cranberry crisp.
