Health education

for kids has slots

Entry forms for the annual Sweet Home Christmas Parade are available at the Chamber of Commerce, 1575 Main St.

The parade is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 2.

The route will run along Long Street from 22nd Avenue to 10th Avenue, with staging at Husky Field, said Parade Committee Chairwoman Debbie Walvatne. Entries may disband at East Linn Museum.

The theme is “A Christmas Toyland,” Walvatne said, and at the end of the parade route, 10th and Long, “we are doing the popcorn log again.”

Last year, chunks of the popcorn log were cut out with an ax and distributed to children.

Jan Hufford of Cedar Shack is making the popcorn log. Ted Hufford is donating the cash to pay for it. Paige Banta Peterson is making the float for the log.

Santa Claus will ride in the parade, Walvatne, and Mrs. Claus may join him.

The parade entry fee is $20. Entry forms may be dropped off at the Chamber of Commerce.

Two trophies will be given, a Sweepstakes Award and a Committee’s Choice, she said. Each division will have first- through third-place ribbons.

The Parade Committee has sufficient volunteers for the event but is still seeking judges, Walvatne said.

Anyone who has a nonprofit group who would like to judge or looking for more information may contact Walvatne at (541) 570-2218.

Tax-Aide program

needs volunteers

The AARP Tax-Aide program is recruiting volunteers.

Training for volunteers starts in January. They offer this free tax preparation service in Linn and Benton counties, but their greatest need is for volunteers in Lebanon and Sweet Home.

AARP Foundation Tax-Aide provides tax preparation help for anyone who cannot afford paid tax services, however those age 60 and over are their primary target audience.

The Tax-Aide program is the nation’s largest free volunteer tax program, offered in conjunction with the IRS. There is no fee and no sales pitch for services, and AARP membership is not required.

Volunteer counselors are needed to work with taxpayers directly by filling out tax returns, using software approved by AARP and the IRS.

If you are interested in volunteering, call (541) 971-5152 or email [email protected].

Public invited to

Redneck Luau

The public is invited to a Redneck Christmas Luau Saturday, Nov. 25, in the Lebanon Senior Center Auditorium, 80 Tangent St., Lebanon.

A matinee is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Dec. 1.

Admission is free with “redneck” luau vittles included.

This production is a mix of Hawaiian and traditional Christmas music with lots of laughs in between, said director Shirley Austin. “Everyone is invited so be ready to eat some tasty morsels, clap your hands with the music and sing along to the holiday songs you know and love.”

The luau food is sponsored by Brookdale Senior Living of Albany. Community members from Albany, Corvallis, Lebanon and Sweet Home are among the cast, which includes the Pacific Pearls as never seen before.
