Exhibit to feature

OSU art alumn

An art exhibit featuring the work of recent Oregon State University graduates is on display at Linn-Benton Community College’s South Santiam Hall Gallery through Oct. 26.

The exhibit titled “Connecting Territories” spans painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture. Artists featured are Johnny Beaver, Milla Oliveira, Francisco Morales and Amy Gibson.

LBCC Art Galleries are free and open to the public. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

The 66th annual Albany Veteran’s Day Parade will be held Sat., Nov. 11.

Ghost hunting at

Monteith House

The Monteith Society is hosting its annual VIP Ghost Hunting Experience Oct. 14, 21 and 27 at the historic Monteith House at 518 SW 2nd Ave, Albany.

Hours are 10:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Each VIP experience is limited to 10 people, who will be joined by experienced paranormal investigators and will learn how to use various pieces of ghost-hunting equipment. VIPs will then get to help conduct a paranormal investigation of the Monteith House.

Cost is $50 per person and reservations are required.

Squarenaders to

hold Hobo Dance

Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold their annual Hobo Square Dance beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Oak Heights school gym, 6th Avenue and Elm Street.

Plus starts at 7:30 p.m., with the main dance from 8 to 10 p.m. Hobo stew will be served at 7 p.m.

Jim Voll will serve as caller, with Jackie Gale cuing round dances.

Suggested donation for adults is $5; $4 for youths.

Mennonite festival at Expo Saturday

The Oregon Mennonite Festival for World Relief will take place from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at Linn County Fair and Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road E, Albany.

The family-friendly event is a community fair and auction that raises funds to meet human needs through the global and U.S. ministries of the Mennonite Central Committee. MCC focuses on disaster relief (including hurricanes), community development, and justice and peace-building. The event includes a live auction, great home-cooked food, children’s activities, a used book booth, and more.

Free genealogy

class starts Monday

Sweet Home Genealogical Society will offer a free “Introduction to Genealogy” class beginning Monday, Oct. 16.

The class, based on a video course presented by Professor John Philip Colletta, genealogist, will cover a wide range of genealogy-related topics, including where to find family history, how to use public records, online resources, writing your life story and much more.

Lectures will be presented twice a day, at noon and at 6 p.m. at the society’s library, 1223 Kalmia St.

Living with chronic

conditions Oct. 18

Learning how to live better with chronic conditions, such as low vision and blindness, will be the topic of the Mid-Valley Low Vision Support Group at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 18, at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Karen Douglas, master trainer and health education coordinator for Samaritan Health Services, will present an overview of the “Living Well with Chronic Conditions Workshop” which she coordinates throughout Linn, Benton and Lincoln counties.

The workshop is proven to help people realize their goals, problem solving, communication skills and improve self-management when living with a chronic condition such as diminishing vision.

Also, last details will be given on the support group’s bus trip to the Casey Eye Institute’s Macular Degeneration Ex on Oct. 28 at Double Tree Conference Center in Portland. There is available space on the bus, which also has two accommodations for wheelchairs.

Reservations must be made and a ticket must be purchased.

Extension course on basic forestry

Oregon State University Extension will offer “Woodland Management,” a weekly basic forestry short course for woodland landowners and managers for four evening sessions beginning at 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 26.

Deadline to register is Friday, Oct. 20.

The course will cover property and site assessment, tree biology and forest ecology, tree planting, care for established forest, weed control, safety, timber sale logistics, laws, and regulations.

Instructor will be Brad Withrow-Robinson, OSU Forestry and Natural Resources agent for Benton County.

Workshop cost is $50 per person or $60 for two people from the same family sharing materials.

Hula fund-raiser auction Oct. 21

The Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club will hold its sixth annual Fall Benefit Auction, Hula for Moola, from 5 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Boys and Girls Club, 890 18th Ave.

Break out those grass skirts and Hawaiian shirts, and join in the fun!

Lacemakers invite

new participants

The Oregon Trail Lacemakers invite new participants to meet every third Saturday to make lace by hand, including bobbin laces, tatting, needlelace, crochet and knitted lace.

Free Medicare class

in Lebanon Oct. 19

The Oregon Cascades West Council of Governments, in partnership with the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) program and the Linn-Benton Community College, will offer a Medicare class that will cover the basics of Medicare parts A, B, C, and D from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, at LBCC’s Lebanon branch, 44 Industrial Way.

The free class is open to anyone who is eligible for Medicare within a few months or is new to Medicare; current beneficiaries who would like to better understand Medicare benefits and options; and spouses and other relatives of Medicare eligible clients.

A SHIBA counselor will present this class.

Zombie Zoup Run

back on Oct. 28

The City of Sweet Home will sponsor its second annual Zombie Zoup Run at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, starting at the Jim Riggs Community Center, 880 18th Ave.

Participants will find out if they can outrun or out-maneuver Zombies desperate to catch them on the two-mile course.

All participants – survivors, zombies and volunteers – will get free admission to the Great Community Soup Event held in the gym at the completion of the event.

Preregistration (online or paper) to walk/run the course is $20. Morning-of onsite registration is $25, starting at 9 a.m.

Brave children 10 years and younger are free, but must be accompanied by a paying adult, who must sign a registration waiver.

An assortment of Zombie Zoup shirts from last year’s event will be available. Adult sizes are $15; children are $10.

All proceeds from the event will go to Sunshine Industries.

Pumpkin carving

contest Oct. 28

Sweet Home Rotary Club will hold a Halloween Pumpkin Carving Contest and Auction from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 28, at the Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club, 890 18th Ave.

Three grand prizes of $50 each will be offered for winning carvers aged 12 and under, over 12 and People’s Choice.

Bring completed pumpkins to the Boys & Girls Club by 11 a.m. and receive five raffle tickets for several great prizes. Additional raffle tickets will be available for purchase at $1 each or $5 for six.

Vote for your favorite team – Oregon State University or the University of Oregon – and get a chance to win a university-themed basket and other great prizes.

Pumpkin pie will be available at $2 a slice.

Proceeds from the event support local Rotary projects.

Meals on Wheels

weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The menu on Friday, Oct. 13, is garden chicken or turkey Mandarin mini salad, both on spinach Romaine, split pea soup, seven grain roll and pineapple.

The menu on Monday, Oct. 16, is beef rigatoni or chicken divan bake, herbed carrots, spinach Romaine salad, garlic roll and vanilla pudding.

The menu on Tuesday, Oct. 17 is chicken salad or egg salad sandwich half on wheat bread, mine-strone soup, broccoli raisin salad, and chilled pears.

Volunteers are needed for both kitchen help and meal delivery.
