‘Gold Rush’ cast member at LBCC

Dave Turin from the Discovery Channel’s “Gold Rush” series will give a free presentation at Linn-Benton Community College from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in the Forum, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Turin is also the keynote speaker at LBCC’s Career Technical Education Signing Day held at the college on the same day.

Turin, from Gresham, is a former high school and college football star who graduated from Portland State University with a degree in civil engineering.

Frontier Heritage

Fair this weekend

The 25th annual Frontier Heritage Fair will be held at the Lane County Fairgrounds Auditorium, 796 W. 13th Avenue, in Eugene Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 18 and 19.

The focus of the fair is pre-1898 America, including the Mountain Man, Civil War and Old West eras.

The event features artifacts and replicas of the period, on display and for sale. A special exhibit of Oregon prehistory is planned, along with displays representing the Hudson’s Bay Company, early explorers, historic Fort Umpqua, the Applegate Trail and NW Coast Native art.

There will be a kids activity area and demonstrations of historic skills along with performances by the Oregon Old Time Fiddlers.

Show times are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $3 for age 12 and over; kids under age 12 are free.

The Frontier Heritage Fair is sponsored by Fort Umpqua Muzzleloaders and is supported in part by a Heritage Outreach Grant from the Lane Country historical Society.

Gardeners invited to Lebanon club

Lebanon Garden Club will hold its monthly meeting at noon on Monday, Feb. 20, at The First Christian Church at 170 E Grant St.

Carol Westergreen, owner of Out In The Garden nursery in Mollalla, will speak on hellebores and other winter flowering plants.

Lebanon Garden Cub is a member of the Santiam District of Garden Clubs. The meeting is open to the public and refreshments are served.

LBCC art gallery

to feature prints

Five Bend artists’ prints will be on display at Linn-Benton Community College through March 17 in an art galley exhibit “Printing the Gamut.”

The artists, from printmaking studio Atelier 6000, will showcase their work in the North Santiam Hall Gallery at Linn Benton Community College, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW Albany.

The reception is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided. LBCC art galleries are free and open to the public weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

‘‘Pride’ on stage at

SHHS Feb. 16-18

Sweet Home High School students will present the play “Pride and Prejudice” at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 16-18, in the high school auditorium, 1641 Long St.

Admission is $4 for adults, $2 for children and senior citizens and $10 for families.

Chamber awards deadline is Friday

The deadline for nominations for the Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce Awards Banquet is Friday, Feb. 17.

The banquet will be held March 11 at the Jim Riggs Community Center.

Award nominations can be picked up at the Chamber of Commerce.

Awards will be presented in the following categories: Organization of the Year, Business of the Year, Distinguished Service, First Citizen, Junior First Citizen and Patti Woods Woman of the Year.

Table sponsorships are also available, for either a half table of 10 or a full table of 20. Sponsors are asked to decorate their tables in accordance with the banquet theme, “Around the World.”

Library fireside stories Feb. 18

Lebanon Public Library will present an evening fireside program featuring storyteller Habiba Addo at 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 18.

Addo is a native of Ghana, west Africa and holds a degree in Theater and a Certificate of Dance from Portland State University. Habiba has performed and taught in the United States and internationally for over fifteen years. She also shares the rich African cultures present today in Cuba and Brazil.

LBCC seeks alum award nominations

Nominations are being accepted for Linn-Benton Community College’s Distinguished Alumni Award.

If you know a former LBCC student who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in their profession and through service to their community, now is your chance to nominate them for this annual award.

Nomination deadline is Monday, Feb. 20. Nomination forms and criteria are available online at http://www.linnbenton.edu/distinguished-alumni. Nominees will be honored at a reception held in April at the college.

Healthy lifestyle class starts Feb. 20

A team of physicians and dietitians at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital will lead a Complete Health Improvement Program class starting in February for people struggling to get their weight or overall health under control.

CHIP is a lifestyle medicine program scientifically proven to help people improve their blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, BMI, sleep, resilience and depression. T

he class integrates optimal nutrition, exercise and behavioral psychology principles and tools to help participants achieve their health goals.

Samaritan staff will lead the 18-session class on Mondays and Thursdays, from Feb. 20 to April 20, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., at the hospital.

Local Community Education classes

LBCC is offering Community Education classes starting in February in Lebanon and Sweet Home.

n Buying and Selling on Ebay. Basic computer skills are a pre-requisite. Class will start Tuesday, Feb. 21 from 6 p.m. to 7:50 at LBCC’s Lebanon Center and meet every Tuesday. Cost is $59.

n Introduction to Facebook. Learn to establish an account, set up your profile, and set security parameters. Basic computer and web browsing skills are necessary. Class will start Thursday, Feb. 9 and meet every Thursday at the Lebanon Center. Cost is $59.

n Lewis and Clark: Oregon & Beyond. The class will provide insight into the activities of the Corps of Discovery in Oregon, the trip back to St. Lewis in 1906, and the activities of the corp members after the corp was disbanded.

The class will also give perspective from the tribal point of view. Class will begin Monday, Feb. 22 from 1 to 2:50 p.m. and will meet every Monday and Wednesday at the Sweet Home LBCC Center. The class is free.

Info fair for new parents Feb. 23

New parents in east Linn County are invited to Baby Blast information fair from 1 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 23, at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital, 525 Santiam Hwy SE, conference rooms B-C.

Baby Blast will provide information about services and resources available in their communities for parents and children. Free health checks for babies will be available.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Feb. 17. is creamed chicken and veggies or beef patty with peppers and onions, whipped potatoes, broccoli raisin salad, bran rye roll and Mandarin oranges.

No meal will be served Monday, Feb. 20, due to Presidents Day observances.

The menu for Tuesday, Feb. 21, baked fish with Tartar sauce or beef mushroom patty, creamed potatoes, green peas, sunflower seed bread and hermit bar.
