Quilter’s Workshop

A Quilters Workshop will be offered from 7 to 7:50 p.m. Thursdays, starting Oct. 13, at Sweet Home High School.

The Linn-Benton Community College class is open to all ability levels. Participants will learn two traditional patterns, the tulip and the log cabin, to make a medallion-style quilt.

Medical students

to hold health fair

Medical students with COMP-Northwest’s Rural Health Club have organized a Rural Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Lebanon Wal-Mart Supercenter, located at 3290 S. Santiam Highway. The event is free and open to the public.

Altogether, the health fair will feature 17 health-care related booths throughout the store. Booths will touch on a variety of topics including: information on income-based medical services, free glucose and blood pressure checks, car seat safety information, recipes for simple healthy meals, concussion awareness, bike safety, healthy smoothie samples with recipes, Latino health, osteopathic manual manipulation, and much more.

Medical Teams International will again have its popular mobile dental program onsite offering free dental exams for all, regardless of insurance or ability to pay.

The Lebanon Fire District will have a fire truck outside of the building and will provide fire safety information.

Two children’s bikes will be raffled off at the end of the fair for those who participate in the event.

Geranium giveaway

Oct. 18 at City Hall

The brilliant colored geraniums that have graced the Sweet Home Main Street median during the summer will be removed and shared with the community at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the City Hall parking lot, 1140 12th Ave.

Bring boxes and bags to haul your plants away. Sweet Home Garden Club members will have information on how to winter geraniums.

Low-vision group

to hear from Lions

The Mid-Valley Low Vision Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Robert Springer, staff member and trustee of the Oregon State Lions Club Sight and Hearing Foundation, will be speaking about a variety of low vision conditions, their causes and treatments. He will also discuss the Lions’ services for the sight-impaired. For example, Lions Clubs have just begun their annual fall term sight screening program in elementary schools across the nation. They also provide a national service for facilitating the national eye donation program.

Springer is a retired optician with 28 years of practice, and resides in Albany.

The Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group is a non-profit, totally self-supporting group. There are no membership fees, and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments are served at each meeting.

Learn about edible

mushrooms Oct. 21

The Sweet Home Ranger District is offering a Fall Edible Mushrooms excursion Friday, Oct. 21.

This is a moderate, approximately two-mile hike. Come prepared for an exciting day of learning to identify local varieties of edible mushrooms in the forest. Bring a small collecting knife and bags or baskets.

Plan on spending the day and make sure to bring appropriate clothing, footwear and lunch. You also will need a picking bucket. A milk jug attached to your belt allows you to keep both hands free.

Mason bee classes

Having trouble getting your fruit trees pollinated? Learn how to cultivate mason bees at a free class offered Oct. 26 and 29 by the Linn County Master Gardeners.

The two-hour workshops will include expert instruction in bee housing, harvesting and storage and other information needed to establish a bee population in your yard. Supplies will be available.

Classes will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. and from noon to 2 p.m. both days.

Also, a class to train mason bee instructors will be offered from 8 a.m. to noon on Oct. 22.

All classes will be held at the Extension Service’s Tangent location. 33630 McFarland Road.

Zombie Run in

SH Oct. 29

Get ready to travel with the Walking Dead Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Zombie Zoup Run, to be held at the Jim Riggs Community Center.

The 2-mile event will benefit Sunshine Industries and will cover favorite Zombie haunts such as the South Hills Trail, Sankey Park and more populated areas. Cost is $20 for pre-registrants, $25 on the day of the event. Shirts for adults are $15 each, $10 for children. Shirts are guaranteed to those who register prior to Oct. 15.

Volunteers needed

for casualty drill

Volunteers are needed to play roles in a mass casualty drill to be conducted Thursday, Oct. 20, by Samaritan Health Services and Ore-gon State University.

The drill will take place from 6 a.m. to noon and will involve four separate locations, including Reser Stadium, Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, Samaritan Albany General Hospital and Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital. It will simulate a gas line explosion at Reser Stadium during a home football game with mass casualties and injuries.

The drill will test how well the different organizations within Benton and Linn counties communicate with each other during a disaster. The exercise will be realistic with emergency response vehicles and REACH aircraft transporting actors to the different event locations.

Volunteers of all ages are still needed to fill multiple roles at each location. Volunteer positions include victims and patients who will be given simulated disaster wounds and make-up to play the part, make-up artists, photographers, experienced actors and those proficient in foreign languages.

Sustainable

landscape training

Learn about creating sustainable landscaping Oct. 25-26 as the Oregon State University Extension Service in Lane County offers a workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days at the OSU Extension Service Lane County office, 996 Jefferson St., in Eugene (enter on 10th at the ramp).

Homeowners can learn to save money on yard maintenance and lessen their impact on the environment. Another workshop is planned for Dec. 14-15.

The two-day training includes a combination of classwork and yard evaluations that can lead to a Sustainable Landscape Certification. Participants will learn a variety of landscape practices that can help them improve water efficiency, enrich soil quality through mulching and composting, create wildlife habitat, reduce the use of pesticides and fertilizers, and protect nearby waterways. Efficiencies in the use of resources should also lead to lower power, water, and waste bills.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Oct. 14, is garden chicken or Asian chicken mini salad on spinach Romaine, potato onion soup, seven grain roll and spiced pears.

The menu for Monday, Oct. 17, is beef rigatoni or chicken divan bake, herbe carrots, spinach Romaine salad, garlic roll and chilled peaches.

The menu for Tuesday, Oct. 18, is chicken or tuna salad sandwich half on wheat bread, minestrone soup, broccoli raisin salad and pineapple.
