Salmon Watch teachers needed

The Linn Benton Salmon Watch Field Trip Program is seeking volunteers to help teach hands-on science to fifth- and sixth-grade students from the mid-Willamette Valley schools.

The field trips take place on the South Santiam River in September and the Alsea River later in the fall. Volunteers will help students observe salmon spawning, take macroinvertebrate samples, test water quality, and make stream bank assessments to better understand watershed health.

The Linn Benton Salmon Watch partners are holding free training on Oct. 15.

This opportunity is a fun outdoor experience for people of all ages.

Santiam Wagon Road hike Sunday

Sweet Home Trails will host a hike on the Santiam Wagon Road starting at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18.

The Santiam Wagon Road was a freight route between the Willamette Valley and Central Oregon regions from 1865 to the 1930s. It is considered one of the most important historical routes in the state. Officially known as the Willamette Valley and Cascade Mountain Wagon Road, the Santiam Wagon Road operated as a toll road until 1915. In 1925, the toll road was turned over to the state of Oregon for use as a highway. U.S. Route 20 closely follows the original route of the wagon road.

The plan is to hike from Mountain House along the Santiam Wagon Road. The hike has some uphill but is not difficult. The plan is to have lunch during the hike and then turn back. The hike will be approximately one hour out, a stop for lunch, and then a hike back to vehicles.

Participants should plan on meeting at the Sweet Home Ranger station at 9:30 a.m. and car pool from there. If you would like to take your own car, meet at the trailhead around 10:30 a.m.
