LBCC to celebrate Earth Day Thursday
LBCC will hold a free Earth Day Celebration 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, April 21, from in the college courtyard, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.
Activities include flowerpot planting, recycling station for your old shoes, tours of the organic farm, mushroom inoculation demonstration, recycled metal art sale, Earth Day T-shirt sale and more.
Wear your favorite hippie garb to the “Dress Like a Hippie” contest. Sign-ups start at 11:30 a.m. and contest starts at 12:15 p.m. on the courtyard stage.
Have lunch at the “Earth Day Café” for just $5, $4 for students.
Learn about alternative energy, therapeutic horticulture, natural resource conservation, native plants, recycling, worm composting, plastics in our oceans, LBCC green campus programs, international efforts, green careers and programs and more.
Dr. Christo Buizert of the Oregon State University College of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences will give a presentation on ice core science titled “An ice core perspective on Climate Change, the last Ice Age, and Shakespeare” from 12 to 12:50 p.m. in LBCC Madrone Hall, room MH-113.

Squarenaders to
hold campout
Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a “Down By The River Square Dance and Campout” Friday through Sunday, April 22-24, at Camp Koinonia, 43062 N. River Road.
Events include square dances, potluck and regular meals, after parties, workshops and more. Callers will be Leonard Snodgrass and Jim Voll. Jackie Gale will cue.
Cost for full weekend is $65, $55 for Saturday and Sunday only. Single dances are $5.

Sweet Home Charter School will hold kindergarten orientation at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 22, at 28721 Liberty Road.
The charter school is a free public school with openings for 2016-17 in kindergarten through sixth grade. School is typically held Monday through Friday. Class sizes are small.

Lebanon Chorus pops concert
The Lebanon Community Chorus invites the public on a visit to Broadway in its annual pops concert at 3 p.m. on April 24 at the First Assembly of God church, 725 W. Oak St., in Lebanon.
Kevin Nordquist will direct the concert, which includes a guest performance by the Lebanon High School Chamber Choir directed by Kevin Wong.
The program includes medleys from “South Pacific,” “Phantom of the Opera,” Gershwin and “Les Miserables.” Also included are hit songs from Fleetwood Mac, Dobie Gray and Manhattan Transfer.
The concert includes several singers from Sweet Home: Kari Bennet; Fran Anderson; Jody Seward; and Susan Thompson. Bennet and Seward will sing solos. Thompson is a board member for the chorus.
Each concert, the chorus contributes $500 to the Lebanon Schools Foundation Music Education Fund to support music education in the Lebanon Schools.
Tickets are $8 for general admission and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce, Lebanon Bi-Mart or at the door.

Super Hero run
on April 30
Senior Alcohol-Free Entertainment Party planners are concocting a “Be a Super Hero for SAFE” run in and around Sankey Park on April 30.
Runners and volunteers are needed.
The event is a fund-raiser for the Senior Alcohol-Free Entertainment party to be held following this year’s Sweet Home High School graduation. Race participants will navigate some 15 obstacles that will include a steep hill climb, balance beam, tire flips, wall climbs, culverts, a straw-bale pyramid, a sand bag carry and a water hazard.
Cost is $45 for adults 18 or older and $35 for 13- to 17-year-olds. before April 28. Group discounts are available. Proceeds will help fund the all-night party following graduation on June 3.
For those who don’t want to scale the heights, volunteers are needed to help with checking in, registration, awards and goodie bags, and monitoring obstacles. Volunteers will be given safety vests to wear during the event, recognized as Super Hero Sidekicks and granted access, along with competitors, to the Nacho/Taco Bar and Root Beer Garden following the event.

Diabetes Day
this Saturday
Samaritan Health Services invites the public to learn more about healthy living at the second annual Diabetes Day, free symposium from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at Boulder Falls Conference Center, 605 Mullins Drive in Lebanon.
Sessions include information about progress in combating diabetes, medications, healthy gardening and a roundtable discussion featuring diabetes educators.
The event will also feature snacks, door prizes and vendors with diabetes-related information and services.

S.A.F.E. Duck Race fund-raiser
Tickets are on sale for the Sweet Home S.A.F.E. Committee Duck Race to be held Saturday, May 7, as a fund-raiser for the 2016 Senior Alcohol Free Entertainment party following graduation.
Participants do not have to be present to win. Actual race time has yet to be determined.
Cost is $5 per duck, with a limit of 800 to be sold. First-place winner will receive $400, if all 800 ducks are sold, or 10 percent of sales. Second-place winner will receive $250 or 6 percent, and third-place winner will receive $150 or 4 percent of the total sales.
There is no limit on purchases, as long as ducks are available.

The Linn Genealogical Society will meet at 1:15 p.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Albany Public Library Meeting Room, 2450 14th Ave. SE.
Pam Vestal will speak on “Voter Records – Genealogy’s Best-Kept Secret.” Are you wondering what your ancestor’s political leanings were, or maybe where they became a citizen, or perhaps what they did for a living? This resource might hold the answer.

5K fun run May 7
for Scio Library
The 3rd Annual Scio 5K Fun Run will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, May 7, at the Scio Public Library, one block west of Main Street.
The course runs around Scio, north and south of Thomas Creek. A family event, the race benefits the local library and is sponsored by the Friends of the Scio Public Library. Runners/walkers may be “poofed” with color powder along the route.
Pre-registration prices are $5 to $20, depending upon age. Add $5 for day-of-the-run registration.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu
Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, April 22, is garden chicken mini salad or mini turkey club salad on spinach Romaine, cream of broccoli soup, bran wheat roll and fresh orange.
The menu for Monday, April 25, is chicken divan bake or spaghetti with meat sauce, French cut green beans, spinach romaine salad, oat bran roll and rhubarb applesauce.
The menu for Tuesday, April 26, is turkey tetrazzini or cowboy campfire stew, Scandinavian blend vegetables, creamy coleslaw, potato wheat roll and rice pudding.
