One-act plays at SHHS this week
Swet Home High School students will perform one-act plays at 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, April 13 and 14, in the school auditorium.
The program includes a mix of comedies and drama.

dinner Friday
Linn County Livestock Association will hold its annual meeting, program and dinner at 6 p.m. Friday, April 15, at First Baptist Church, 27910 Seven Mile Lane, in Brownsville.
The program includes a panel discussion on forages with Jerry Hall of Grasslands Oregon and Ore-gon Forage and Grasslands Council, and an update on Oregon State University research and Extension activities from Shelby Filley.
Cost is $6 per person for dinner, and $10 per family for membership renewal.

Gleaners plan chili

Fair Share Gleaners will hold a chili feed fund-raiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 15, at 3714 Long St.
Cost for the all-you-can-eat dinner is $5 for adults and $2.50 for children 12 and under.
Sunshine spaghetti

Sunshine Industries will hold its fifth annual Spaghetti Dinner/Auction starting at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 16, at 1333 Clark Mill Road.
Cost is $15 per person for those 13 and over, $5 each for those 5-12, and free for guests under 5.
Admission includes one raffle ticket for a door prize of two three-day Oregon Jamboree tickets.

Trails group plans
Wagon Road hike
Sweet Home Trails Committee is holding a hike on Santiam Wagon Road to Walton Ranch this Saturday, April 16.
Meet at the Sweet Home Ranger District Office, 4431 Highway 20, at 9 a.m. to carpool to the starting point.
The hike will be about two miles, over easy to moderate terrain. Waterproof hiking boots, lunch, water and rain gear are recommended.

LBCC to hold free Career Fair April 20
A free Career Fair will be held at Linn Benton Community College from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the Activities Center gym, Albany campus, 6500 Pacific Blvd. S.W.
More than 80 businesses, industries and government agencies will provide information on careers and employment opportunities. College advisors will be available to answer questions on career and technical training programs.
Be prepared to ask questions, distribute your resume and complete applications.

Vision group to
meet April 20
Marja Byers will be the featured speaker at the Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group at 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, in the Willamette Community Room at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.
Byers, who is visually impaired herself, is the Oregon executive director of Blindskills, a national organization for visually challenged and blind people.
Byers will speak on how the visually impaired can come closer together as a cohesive group in order to impact and educate more people about their visual challenges. She will also be announcing Blindskills’ new project which will encourage community interaction between the visually impaired and the community at large.
The Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group is free and all are welcome.

Free gardening
class Tuesday
A free series of short lunchtime sessions on popular gardening topics is held Tuesdays at the Lebanon LBCC Center, 44 Industrial Way, from noon to 1 p.m. through April.
A similar series will be held Wednesdays in May at the Albany Public Library, 2450 14th Ave. SE.
Bring a sack lunch and meet other gardeners with similar interests. It’s informal, informative, and fun – drop in – no reservations needed, and there is no charge.
The topic for Tuesday, April 19, will be “Growing Great Salad Greens.” Enjoy a nutritious dinner from your home garden, with Brooke Edmunds of the Oregon State University Horticulture faculty.
Wildland fire class
starts April 22
A class in basic wildland firefighting will be held at Linn-Benton Community College starting April 22.
This five-day class meets April 22-24, 30 and May 1 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at LBCC, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.
Upon class completion, students receive a certificate, which may be beneficial when applying for positions with private wildland firefighting contractors, the Oregon Department of Forestry, the US Forest Service, or rural and city fire departments.

Vendors sought for Block Party
Downtown Sweet Home businesses will host a Sweet Home Outtasight Block Party on Saturday, May 14, and they are recruiting.
The event will run from 1 to 3 p.m. Organizers aim to bring activity downtown for local businesses and to offer something fun for the entire community.
The event will include the grand opening of one new local business and an anniversary celebration for another.
Activities include vendors selling food and goodies, door prizes, hula hoop and other contests, a photo booth and music from local artists.

Super Hero runners, volunteers needed
Senior Alcohol-Free Entertainment party planners are concocting a “Be a Super Hero for SAFE” run in and around Sankey Park on April 30.
Runners and volunteers are needed.
The event is a fund-raiser for the Senior Alcohol-Free Entertainment party to be held following this year’s Sweet Home High School graduation. Race participants will navigate some 15 obstacles that will include a steep hill climb, balance beam, tire flips, wall climbs, culverts, a straw-bale pyramid, a sand bag carry and a water hazard.
Cost is $45 for adults 18 or older and $35 for 13- to 17-year-olds, before April 28. Group discounts are available. Proceeds will help fund the all-night party following graduation on June 3.
For those who don’t want to scale the heights, volunteers are needed to help with checking in, registration, awards and goodie bags, and monitoring obstacles. Volunteers will be given safety vests to wear during the event, recognized as Super Hero Sidekicks and granted access, along with competitors, to the Nacho/Taco Bar and Root Beer Garden following the event.

Free Diabetes Day
event April 20
Samaritan Health Services invites the public to learn more about healthy living at the second annual Diabetes Day, free symposium from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 23, at Boulder Falls Conference Center, 605 Mullins Drive in Lebanon.
Dr. Priya Krishnamurthy, an endocrinologist with Premier Endocrinology Associates in Salem, will lead the free event with a talk on “What’s change got to do with it – why we struggle.”
Breakout sessions will include information about new diabetes medications, healthy aspects of gardening, and a roundtable discussion with Samaritan diabetes educators from Albany, Corvallis and Lebanon.
The event will also feature snacks, door prizes and vendors with diabetes-related information and services. Registration is required.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, April 15, beef Spanish rice or King Ranch chicken bake, herbed carrots, spinach Romaine salad, multigrain roll and cinnamon applesauce.
The menu for Monday, April 18, is herb chicken patty or country fried steak, whipped potatoes with gravy, mixed vegetables, wheat bread and spiced apples.
The menu for Tuesday, April 19, is shaved turkey or meatloaf sandwich half on wheat bread, pinto bean soup, broccoli raisin salad and pineapple.
