driver’s education
Linn-Benton Community College is offering Driver Education courses in March and April in Sweet Home and Albany.
Cost is $265 for ages 17 and under, $445 for ages 18 and over.
Course includes Oregon State mandated 30 hours of classroom instruction, a one-time parent/student orientation plus 12 hours behind-the-wheel practice and driver observation. Upon successful completion of the course, students under the age of 18 may qualify for a car skills testing waiver when obtaining their Oregon driver’s license.

Ombudsmen for
elderly sought
Applications are being accepted for Certified Ombudsman volunteers to serve licensed long-term care facility residents in Linn and Benton Counties.
The Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is a free and confidential advocacy program available to residents, families, facility staff and the public.
Ombudsmen advocate for residents of nursing facilities, residential care and assisted living facilities, and adult foster care homes. Complaints are investigated and resolved by professional ombudsmen and trained volunteers assigned to facilities.
There are openings for six volunteers. A five-day training will be held in the Corvallis area beginning early April.
Those wishing to apply and be eligible to attend training should apply before March 14. This is the only time in 2016 the training will be held in the Corvallis area.

Social gathering
for adults offered
An adults-only social gathering will be held Fridays, from 7 to 9 p.m., beginning March 11 at Hom,e Sweet Home Café, 1333 Main St.
The event will include opportunities to meet new people and a variety of games. Cost is $5.

Improv Comedy
Jam at LBCC
“Improv Comedy Jam” will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at Linn-Benton Community College’s Russell Tripp Performance Center, Takena Hall, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.
This live comedy show features spontaneous scenes and games in the style of the popular TV show “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”
Performers include actors from LBCC, South and West Albany High Schools, Oregon State University, Open Source Improv and Majestic Improv, with several scenes played by Improv veterans from the region.
Audience participation is encouraged, including shouting out suggestions for scenes and joining the actors on stage for “all play” community games.

Gospel group to
perform Sunday
The Bethel Mountain Gospel Band will appear in concert at River of Life Fellowship, 1658 Long St. on Sunday, March 13.
The group sings and plays a variety of instruments with a distinct gospel music sound. Members of the Salem-based group are Will Barnhart, Larry Knox, Gene Stutzman, Craig Ulrich, Jerry Stutzman Tyce Pedersen and Jerry Schrock.

Guide dog owner
to speak March 16
Anni Holsworth, who’s visually challenged, and her guide dog Beethoven will demonstrate their training, bonding and teamwork as they safely navigate a world of sighted people at the March meeting of the Mid-Valley Low Vision Support Group.
The presentation will be at noon Wednesday, March 16, at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.
Both Holsworth and Beethoven are recent graduates of the Guide Dogs of the Desert School in Palm Springs, Calif., where they spent four weeks together in the school’s comprehensive training program.
Holsworth will detail the type of training given to her and Beethoven, and demonstrate some of the results.
Holsworth has taught computers to blind students at the former Oregon School for the Blind, and she has been a board member on the Oregon Commission for the Blind and also was on the board of the Oregon State Library’s Talking Books division. She currently owns her own business, “Joy of Screen Reading,” which is tutoring visually challenged people on computers, iPhones and other electronic devices. She resides in Millersburg with her husband Barry.
The Mid-Valley Low Vision Support Group welcomes anyone to attend their meetings – not only visually challenged people, but also their family and friends. There is no membership requirement. Refreshments of cookies and coffee are provided.

Workshop
Sweet Home Genealogical Society will hold its 36th Annual Genealogical Workshop Friday and Saturday, March 18-19, at the Genealogical Library, 1123 Kalmia St.
Friday’s session will start with registration at 10 a.m., with the first session at 10:45. Sessions include “What’s New in Genealogy” and computer instruction led by Paul Aziz.
Saturday’s session will start with registration at 9:30 a.m., with the first session at 10. Topics include “Genealogy Detective – Crossing the Pond” and “What To Do After We Cross the Pond.”
Cost per day is $12.50 for current SHGS members or $15 for non-members.
A lunch sandwich and salad bar will be available each day for $5 or participants are welcome to bring their own brown-bag lunches or eat at local cafes. Coffee, tea and bottled water will be complimentary.

Ham Bingo Friday
at HS cafeteria
Ham Bingo will be held from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, March 19, at the Sweet Home High School Cafeteria.
The event will benefit the SHHS SAFE Committee, SHHS Forestry Club and the Calapooia Critters 4-H Club.
Cost to play is 25 cents per card/game or $20 to play all night with four cards. Door prizes and raffle drawings will be offered. Winners need to be present.
This is a family event, but minors must be accompanied by a parent. Concessions will be available.

SAFE organizers
plan obstacle run
Prepare now.
Senior Alcohol-Free Entertainment Party planners are concocting a “Be a Super Hero for SAFE” run up a side of a mountain on April 30.
The course will include at least a dozen obstacles, including a water hazard.
Cost is $45 for adults 18 or older and $35 for 13- to 17-year-olds. before April 28. Group discounts are available. Proceeds will help fund the all-night party folowing graduation on June 3.

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, March 11, is broccoli cheese ome-let bake or chicken pastina, mixed vegetables, spinach Romaine salad, wheat roll and hermit bar.
The menu for Monday, March 14, is cowboy campfire stew or chicken tetrazzini, cut green beans, creamy coleslaw, oatmeal roll and lemon whip.
The menu for Tuesday, March 15, is chicken lo mein or beef chili with beans, chuckwagon corn, tossed salad, sunflower seed roll and golden fruit cup.
