& Girls Club

meeting

The

Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club will hold a “State of the Club”

Community Meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 11, at the club, 890 18th

Ave.

The

Sweet Home Council will talk about the financial picture and the

future. Tim Schatz, elementary school coordinator, will report on

what children are doing in the after-school program, and athletic

director Mike Carpenter will discuss the sports program.

Volunteers

needed

for

Sweetheart Run

The

City of Sweet Home needs volunteers to help out with the

Sweetheart Run from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Feb. 13.

Proceeds

from the event, which includes 5K and 10K races, as well as a

one-mile kids run, will go to Boys & Girls Club summer program

scholarships and for city parks programs and equipment.

Couples

and families are encouraged to participate. For early sign-up

Hall, at The New Era, or on race day at the event. Races start at 10

a.m. Registration includes running gloves for participants while

supplies last and long-sleeved T-shirts will also be available on

race day.

Squarenaders

offer

dance

lesson series

Sweet

Home Squarenaders will hold a “Learn to Square Dance” class from

4 to 5:30 p.m. starting Sunday, Feb. 14, at Oak Heights School Gym at

6th Avenue and Elm Street.

The

first class is free; a $5 donation per class is requested after that.

Caller/Teacher

will be Jim Voll, who has 30 years of experience teaching the art and

fun of square dancing. All ages are welcome. Casual attire is

suggested. Family price donations packages are available.

Vision

group to meet Feb. 17

Mid

Valley Low Vision Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb.

17, at Brookdale Grand Prairie, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Bill

Lilja, who has been visually challenged since birth with a genetic

non-correctable eye condition, will lead the group discussion.

His declining vision is now at 20/2000, and he is color blind.

In spite of his low vision, he earned a masters degree in clinical

psychology from Portland University. After two decades of a

successful career in counseling troubled youth, he and his

wife started an employment service which ultimately

employed over 4,000 temporary employees throughout the

Pacific Northwest, and placed hundreds of permanent executives in

major companies in the continental United States.

He

is now retired and lives with his wife in Albany.

At

this meeting, printed materials from local, state and federal

programs who provide services to low vision and blind people

will be available to take, as well as sales catalogs featuring

low-vision supplies and equipment.

The

Mid Valley Low Vision Support Group meets the third Wednesday of each

month. All are welcome to attend, especially family and friends;

there is no membership fee. Light refreshments are served.

Registration

open for

pollinators class

Learn

about ways in which bees and other pollinators can help your garden

and fruit trees at the Oregon State University Extention’s BEEvent

from 7:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on March 12 at the Holiday Inn, 105 Opal

Court, near the fairgrounds in Albany.

Speakers

will discuss ways in which pollinators can help gardeners and threats

some are facing, including seminars on bumblebees and mason bees.

Vendors

will be present and snacks and drinks will be provided.

Meals

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the

Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,

Tuesdays and Fridays.

The

Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time

diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested

donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea

upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The

lunch menu on Friday, Feb. 12, is roast turkey or meatloaf, both with

gravy, whipped potatoes with gravy, Oregon bean medley, cracked wheat

bread and poppyseed cake.

No

lunch will be served Monday, Feb. 15, due to the Presidents’ Day

holiday.

The

menu for Tuesday, Feb. 16, is southern chicken and rice or macaroni

and cheese, dilled carrots, marinated broccoli salad, dill wheat roll

and chilled peaches.
