tree permits available
Christmas
tree permits for the Willamette National Forest are on sale in Sweet
Home at various locations.
Permits
are $5 each and are good for cutting one tree in designated areas of
the forest. Each household can purchase a maximum of five permits.
They
are available at the Sweet Home Ranger District office, 4431 Highway
20; Coffee Hut, 2450 Santiam Highway; Bi-Mart, 1980 Main St .; Dan
Dee Sales, 610 Main St .; and Sweet Home Chamber of Commerce, 1575
Main St.
People
setting out to cut a tree are reminded to be be prepared for drastic
weather changes. Weather in the mountains can be much different than
conditions in the valley and can change quickly.
Prepare
for the unexpected; bring a handsaw or axe as well as winter clothing
and safety equipment. Tire chains and a shovel also are recommended,
as is extra food, drinking water, blankets, a flashlight, first aid
kit and survival gear. Tree-cutting and travel may take longer than
anticipated, so notify a friend or family member where you’re
going, get an early start, and leave the woods well before dark.
Life
Skills craft
fair
Wednesday
The
Sweet Home Junior High Basic Life Skills class will hold its fifth
annual craft fair from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the
Sweet Home School District Office.
The
event will give students a chance to handle money, interact with
customers, show off what they have made and practice social skills.
Students will be responsible for handling transactions at their own
table.
The
event, which is open to the public, will feature items made by
students from multiple districts.
Items
on display for sale will include wreaths, jewelry, beaded angels,
bookmarks and Christmas ornaments.

Livestock/Forages
meeting
Tuesday
Linn-Benton
Livestock and Forages will hold its monthly breakfast educational
program from 6:30 to 8 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Pioneer
Villa Restaurant Truck Stop on Highway 228, at
exit 216 on I-5.
The
topic will be “Record Keeping for Livestock Productivity.” Beef
and Sheep production efficiency can be improved by using records of
past performances and record keeping systems can help document
important measures.
The
NCBA Red Book and accompanying Excel Spread Sheets will be
demonstrated as one way to track beef cattle; the Flock Record Book
and Evaluation of Flock Production & Sheep Production Handbook
will be reviewed for sheep. They are also available for sale.
The
Red Book can be pre-ordered for $7 and the CD for cattle for $8 from
the Oregon State University Extension Service.
Also
on the agenda is planning for the upcoming year’s programs.

Transportation
forum
at OSU
A
forum to discuss building healthy communities in Benton and Linn
counties, “Connecting the Dots between Health and Transportation,”
will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 8, at the Oregon
State University’s LaSells Stewart Center.
Mark
Fenton, a leading expert on designing healthy, walkable communities,
will lead the event. Fenton is the former host of the “America’s
Walking” series on PBS television. He has authored numerous books,
including bestseller “Complete Guide to Walking for Health, Weight
Loss and Fitness.”
The evening event is free and open to
the public. Policymakers, community members, and those seeking to
learn more about the intersections of health and transportation are
encouraged to attend.

Night at
SH
B&G Club
Boys
and Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam will host Family Night Out
from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Sweet Home clubhouse, 890
18th Ave.
The
event will include inflatables, Christmas crafts, a gift walk, an
appearance by Santa, cookie decorating and chili and cornbread.

are asked to bring a can or box of food to help a needy family.

‘Nutcracker’
in
Albany

Legacy
Ballet will perform a classic holiday production of “The
Nutcracker” Dec. 10, 11 and 12 at Linn-Benton Community College’s

times are 7 p.m. nightly, with a matinee performance Dec. 12 at 2
p.m.

for Kids
volunteers
sought
Boys
and Girls Clubs of the Greater Santiam is seeking “caring adults”
to volunteer for its Day for Kids, from 3:45 to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday,
Dec. 16 at the Sweet Home clubhouse, 890 18th Ave.
Volunteers
will have an opportunity to demonstrate “in a tangible way” that
the community cares about children and will be able to learn about
the club and its programs, as well as dialogue with a child. Service
clubs, organizations and businesses are encouraged to be part of the
challenge by recruiting volunteers

Meals
on Wheels
weekly
menu
Meals
on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the
Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,
Tuesdays and Fridays.
First-time
diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested
donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea
upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The
lunch menu on Friday, Dec. 4, is BBQ chicken or fish patty sandwich
on a bun, mixed vegetables, lime perfection salad and ice cream cup.
The
menu for Monday, Dec. 7, is homestyle turkey patty or beef
Swiss-style patty, whipped potatoes with gravy, seasoned carrots,
potato wheat bread and chocolate oatmeal bar.
The
menu for Tuesday, Dec. 8, is beef and cabbage bake or macaroni and
cheese, broccoli cuts, Romaine iceberg salad, onion roll and mixed
fruit cup.
