for homeless vets is Nov. 12

A

Mid-Valley Stand Down for Homeless Veterans event will be held from 9

a.m. to 4 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 at the River Center, 3000 Hwy.

20, Lebanon.

Transportation

will be provided from the VFW Hall in Sweet Home.

Multiple

organizations will provide information and help with all manner of

issues including job searches, medical care, legal aid, alcohol and

drug treatment, identification and more.

Refreshments

will be served, and personal care items and DOL gear for homeless

veterans will be offered.

Veterans

should bring proof of their status.

SHPD

Steakout is Nov. 13 at Point

The

Point Restaurant, 6305 Main St., will host the annual Steakout with

the Sweet Home Police Department from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on

Friday, Nov. 13.

The

Point will contribute a percentage of the proceeds from dinner that

evening to the SHPD children’s programs, including the bike helmet

program, the Teen Sharing Tree, Shop with a Cop and Peer Court.

SHPD

staff will assist in serving dinner. Activities include law

enforcement trivia.

Elkettes

annual bazaar Nov. 13-14

The

Elkettes will hold their annual Fall Bazaar from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Friday and Saturday, Nov. 13-14, at the Elks Lodge, 440 Osage St.

A

variety of vendors, a bake sale and goodies will be featured. The

event is open to the public. Lunch will be available for purchase.

Promises plans Bunco night

Little

Promises, 28028 Pleasant Valley Road, will hold a Bunco fund-raiser

from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Squarenaders

plan dinner for Nov. 14

The

Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold their Thanksgiving Dinner Dance at

6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14 in the Oak Heights gym.

A

PEO

sells wreaths for scholarships

PEO

Chapter FA members are taking pre-orders for handmade fresh wreaths.

The

wreaths will be made on 14-inch frames with fresh local greenery and

adorned with pine cones and large fluffy bows.

The

cost is $15 each.

They

will be available for pickup from Nov. 30 to Dec. 3 at Lin Gagner’s

home, 27745 Riggs Hill Road. Earlier pickup or delivery may be made

by special arrangement.

Commission

seeks input for awards

The

Sweet Home Planning Commission is seeking nominations for the 2015

Community Quality Development Awards.

The

purpose of the awards is to recognize individuals, businesses and

organizations who have contributed significantly to improving the

environment, physical appearance of buildings, and/or open space

within the city limits. The awards honor efforts to address

beautification, livability, and creation of a sense of place, whether

on a street or in a public space or neighborhood.

Nominations

must be submitted by Nov. 15.

The

nomination criteria are as follows:

nConstruction/renovation must be completed in 2015;

nBeautification: A new, renovated, remodeled residence or commercial

building, surrounding building or landscape improvements, that

enhances or improves aesthetics and presentation of the property or

adds to neighborhood appearance;

nSustainable building: A new, renovated, remodeled residence or

commercial building that exhibits exemplary sustainability features

in design and/or construction including landscape aesthetics and

presentation of property;

nIndividual/group initiates, contributes to economic development in

Sweet Home;

nHas historical significance to Sweet Home; and

nProject must be inside city limits.

Master

gardener classes to start

Do

you visit gardens on vacation? Stop neighbors in their yards to

ask about their plants? Give free advice to fellow shoppers at

the nursery? Love gardening, want to know more and enjoy giving

back to your community?

Consider

joining the Oregon State University Extension Linn County Master

Gardener program.

People

certified as Master Gardener volunteers are required to participate

in a class one day a week, for 11 consecutive weeks in January,

February and March for a total of 66 hours of classroom instruction.

Some previous gardening experience is helpful, but not a requirement.

Then there are a required 66 hours of volunteer service—usually

just the start of a lifetime of garden-related volunteering,

friendship and fun as a member of the Linn County Master Gardener

Association.

AARP

seeks help for tax assistance

AARP

Foundation Tax-Aide, the nation’s largest, free, volunteer tax

assistance and preparation service, is seeking volunteers in Linn

County for the upcoming tax season.

Tax

counselors, on-site greeters, appointment schedulers and volunteers

who speak a second language are needed.

Volunteers

with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program, help people in their own

communities with a much-needed service that’s free, individualized

and has no strings attached. No prior experience is needed. Training

is provided.

Meals

on Wheel weekly menu

Meals

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the

Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,

Tuesdays and Fridays.

The

Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time

diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested

donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea

upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The

lunch menu on Friday, Nov. 13, is ground beef and potato bake or

chicken lo mein, with green peas, tossed salad, an onion roll and

gelatin jewels with whipped topping.

The

menu for Monday, Nov. 16, is chicken ala king or spaghetti with meat

sauc and a garlic roll, with whipped potatoes, broccoli cuts, a bran

rye roll and a hermit bar..

The

menu for Tuesday, Nov. 17, is turkey loaf with gravy or beef patty

with gravy, with whipped potatoes, cut green beans, oatmeal bread and

pineapple.
