Library storytime for teens, adults

Storyteller Christopher Leebrick will present “The Tell-Tale Heart” by Edgar Allen Poe, followed by a lively discussion about the story and the author at the Sweet Home Public Library at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 15.

The program will continue with one or two spooky stories from around the globe, concluding with a final short piece by Poe.

Library officials warn that the story is not appropriate for younger children and suggests that spectators be 12 or older.

Pregnancy Center

dinner, movie

Sweet Home Pregnancy Care Center will hold a fund-raiser featuring a spaghetti dinner and a free movie Saturday, Oct. 17, at River of Life Fellowship, 1658 Long St.

The menu for dinner, from 5 to 6 p.m., includes spaghetti, salad and bread. Cost is $7 per person, with a family discount for three or more of $5 per person.

Following dinner will be a free showing of the movie “Ring the Bell,” a story the of a slick, big-city sports agent who becomes stranded in a small town while trying to sign a baseball player.

He finds the simplicity of life and the faith of the people standing in stark contrast to his own fast-paced, win-at-all-costs mindset.

Free geranium

giveaway Tuesday

Sweet Home Beautification Committee will hold its annual Geranium Giveaway from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at the City Hall Parking Lot, 1140 12th Ave. between City Hall and the fire station.

A total of 850 geraniums and other plants from the downtown median strip, planted last spring, courtesy will be available for free – first come, first served. The distribution is courtesy of the Sweet Home Beautification Committee volunteers and the City of Sweet Home.

Recipients are asked to bring containers to take plants home in for wintering.

Back pain seminar free at hospital

Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital will hold a free seminar on back pain management with Dr. Kevin Cuccaro, a specialist in pain management, on Tuesday, Oct. 20.

What everyone needs to know about back pain will take place from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in conference rooms B and C at the hospital.

Cuccaro is a fellowship-trained pain specialist and past associate program director of the U.S. Navy’s Pain Medicine Fellowship program.

He speaks frequently to patient and physician groups on the treatment of chronic pain.

His seminar will touch on the following areas:

n Current back pain treatment methods and their results.

n Back pain outcomes (who gets better, who doesn’t, and why).

n The two main “types” of back pain and why they matter.

n Answers to common (but important) questions about back pain.

The public is invited. A light lunch will be available. Pre-registration is required.

Library open mic planned Oct. 22

The Sweet Home Public Library will host an open-mic event from 6:15 to 7: 15 p.m. on Oct. 22.

Local author Corinna Dominy will read from her book “Matters of the Heart.”

Signups begin at 6 p.m. The first to sign up is the first to read. The total number of readers will be limited by available time. The time limit is seven minutes per reader.

Library officials ask that writers avoid graphic violence, sex or hate speech.

The program is free and open to the public. Those not interested in reading are welcome to come and listen as writers present their work.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Oct. 16, is garden chicken or Asian chicken mini salad on spinach Romaine, potato onion soup, seven grain roll and applesauce.

The menu for Monday, Oct. 19, is spaghetti with meat sauce or chicken divan bake, herbed carrots, spinach Romaine salad, garlic roll and apple crisp.

The menu for Tuesday, Oct. 20, is chicken or tuna salad sandwich half on wheat bread, minestrone soup, broccoli raisin salad and pineapple.
