Tacos and Tours at Boys & Girls Club
The Sweet Home Boys & Girls Club will hold “Tacos & Tours” from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, prior to Sweet Home High School’s first football game on its new artificial turf field.
The public is invited to visit the club for a tour of the facilities and to enjoy a taco dinner with all of the trimmings and dessert, then is encouraged to attend the game.
The dinner costs $7.50 for individuals or $25 for a family. A small raffle will also be held. All proceeds go to the Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club.

Sheriff’s academy
deadline is Friday
The deadline for applying to Linn County Sheriff’s Office’s fall Citizens Academy is Friday, Sept. 18.
The 11-week course runs Sept. 29 – Dec. 7 at the Linn County Sheriff’s Office in Albany on Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to noon. It is free and designed to improve citizens’ understanding of the inner workings of the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and to gain a deeper understanding of how we are organized and operate.

Sock hop benefit for injured couple
The Sweet Home Elks will hold a Sock Hop and Cruise In starting at 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, as a benefit for a Sweet Home couple injured in a motorcycle crash.
The event will feature hot dogs, burgers and root beer floats from 5 to 7 p.m., with family-friendly dancing to a deejay from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission after 9 p.m. is limited to those 21 and over.
The beneficiaries will be Roger and Pam Burnett, who were seriously injured in a crash in July and have incurred a tremendous amount of medical expenses. They plan to be present at the event.
Donations of cash or prizes for drawings are being accepted. Poodle skirts and old cars are encouraged but not required.

Free health
screening for kids
Children who might be in need of specialized care at a Shriners hospital can receive a free screening at one of the Samaritan Health Services pediatric clinics in September or October.
No appointment is necessary at any of the screenings. The schedule is as follows:
n Corvallis: Thursday, Sept. 17, 9 a.m. to noon, at Samaritan Pediatrics, 777 NW Ninth St., Suite 320.
n Albany: Thursday, Sept. 24, 9 a.m. to noon, Mid-Valley Children’s Clinic, 734 Elm St. SW.
n Lebanon: Thursday, Oct. 1, 9 a.m. to noon, Mid-Valley Pediatrics, 675 N. 5th St.
The Linn and Benton County Shrine clubs will co-host the screenings, with the goal of screening kids up to 18 years of age with orthopedic conditions, burns or scars. Samaritan-affiliated pediatricians will conduct the screenings and determine if the child should be seen at the Shriners Hospital for Children in Portland where they would be eligible to receive treatment at no charge.
In addition, members of the Shrine clubs and local Masonic lodges will offer child identification packets to parents. These packets will consist of pictures and fingerprints, which will be taken on-site. Parents will be able to take their child’s identification packet home with them at the end of the screening.
Snacks will be provided for the kids while they wait to see a physician.

Squarenaders offer
square dance class
Sweet Home Squarenaders will hold a square dance class beginning from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Oak Heights School gymnasium.
No experience or partners required.
The first class is free; a $5 donation per class is suggested after that. Family price packages are available.
Attire can be casual. The class will feature mostly classic country music.
Jim Voll will be the teacher and caller. Voll brings 30 years of experience to the class.

SHARC benefit needs performers
The Second Annual SHARC Showdown talent contest on Sept. 26 is accepting registration and selling advance tickets at The New Era, 1313 Main St., and Chamber of Commerce, 1575 Main St.
The show is a benefit by the Sweet Home Auditorium Remodel Committee for Sweet Home performing arts and to improve the the Sweet Home High School auditorium.
The talent contest begins at 7:30 p.m. in the high school auditorium, 1641 Long St.
First-, second- and third-place prizes of $300, $200 and $100 will be given in two divisions, 13 and younger and 14 and older.
A barbecue chicken dinner will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the high school cafeteria.
Combination dinner-show tickets are available for $10 until Sept. 18. After that, dinner costs $10, and the show costs $5. The show is $3 for students and free for children under 7 years old.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu
Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.
Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.
The lunch menu on Friday, is Sept. 18, chicken Spanish rice or macaroni and cheese, lima beans, spinach Romaine salad, potato wheat roll and lime whip.
The menu for Monday, Sept. 21, is chicken pomodoro or braised beef tips with rice, steamed carrots, marinated zucchini salad, cracked wheat roll and pineapple.
The menu for Tuesday, Sept. 22, is chicken with supreme sauce or Salisbury patty, whipped potatoes, Scandinavian blend vegetables, French bread and apple crisp.
