Peer Court needs

student volunteers

Student volunteers are needed Sweet Home Peer Court during the 2015-16 school year.

Peer Court is a program in which youths who have committed first-time misdemeanors or violations are judged through a court system of their peers. The presenters, clerks, bailiffs, and jurors are volunteers from 12 through 17 years of age, or in their senior year of high school.

Offenders have admitted guilt and are standing trial to be sentenced by their peers.

Peer Court will begin in late September and run consistently throughout the school year. Court Hearings will be held at 4 p.m. every Tuesday at the police department.

One-act players on

stage in Corvallis

The Majestic Theatre in Corvallis will stage “Picasso,” “Mink Ties” and “The King of Cats,” three one-act plays by Don Nigro, Sept. 4-6 at 115 SW 2nd St.

Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 4 and 5, and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 6. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students and seniors.

Women’s shelter

benefit Saturday

Love Thy Neighbor Services, which is working to open a transitional shelter in Sweet Home for older women, will hold a fund-raiser from 1 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Sankey Park.

Local bands will perform and food and drink, including cotton candy, snow cones and popcorn, will be available. Volunteers are needed to help with booths. The public is invited to enjoy music in the park.

Bus riders invited

to discuss schedule

Linn Shuttle will hold meetings on Sept. 8 and Sept. 16 to discuss raising the number of bus routes offered by the service from six to seven per day.

The proposal would be to maintain the two morning routes and the final daily route from Sweet Home to Albany and back as they are, but add an additional route to those in between to decrease wait times in the late morning and early afternoon.

A meeting in Sweet Home is planned at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 16, at the Sweet Home Senior Center East Dining Room to discuss the schedule changes for the shuttle and also for the in-town Sweet Home Shopper bus.

Meetings will also be held Tuesday, Sept. 8, from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Linn-Benton Community College Albany Campus Forum Room 104, and from 4 to 5 p.m. at LBCC’s Lebanon Center Annex, 44 Industrial Way.

Dinner, program for women Tuesday

Lebanon After Five Connection will hold a dinner and special program from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, at King’s Coffee House, 661 S. Main St. in Lebanon.

Local writer Lori McNulty, who teaches a regular college class on the subject, will share how to write one’s own story.

Guest speaker Tanja Gorham from Inland City will speak about her journey from fear and anger to peace and joy while caring for a disabled husband and, now, her parents.

Cost is $7 and credit cards are not accepted.

CASA volunteer

Court Appointed Special Advocates of Linn County will hold an information session from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, at Santiam Travel Station, 750 S. 3rd St. in Lebanon.

CASA is a federally and state-mandated non-profit organization that recruits, trains and supports community citizens to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children who are under the protection of the Juvenile Dependency Court. In an overburdened social welfare system, many of these children will “slip through the cracks” among the hundreds of open dependency cases. CASA is the only volunteer organization that empowers everyday citizens as officers of the court.

Tomato and salsa

festival in Lebanon

Timeless Gardens in Lebanon will hold its annual Tomato and Salsa Fest from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12., at 33527 Brewster Road.

The event will include fused glass jewelry, goatsmilk soaps and baby goats, fresh-baked goodies, handmade textiles, salsa making and tomato sampling.

Also, Original Salsa and Biggest Tomato contests will be held.

Meeting to discuss

Christmas parade

A meeting for those interested in helping to plan a lighted night parade for “Home Sweet Home for Christmas” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at the chamber, 1575 Main St.

Free diabetes info

at support group

People with diabetes or pre-diabetes can learn more about managing their condition at a free monthly support group at Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital.

Samaritan Lebanon Community Hospital’s Diabetes Education team will host the group on the first Monday of each month, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the hospital.

One of the team’s educators will lead a lesson, followed by time for any questions that participants may have.

This month’s topic, on Monday, Sept. 14, will be autumn cooking with Angie Frederic, diabetes educator with the hospital’s Diabetes Education team.

Sweet Home High School Class of 1958 will hold its annual potluck picnic for Classes 1955 through 1960, and anyone else who would like to attend, from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13, at Roberts Park.

Meals on Wheels

weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, Sept. 4, is chicken or tuna salad sandwich half on wheat bread, vegetarian vegetable soup, broccoli raisin salad and mixed fruit cup.

No lunch will be served Monday, Sept. 7, due to the Labor Day holiday.

The menu for Tuesday, Sept. 8, is BBQ chicken sandwich or kielbasa, both on a bun, whole kernel corn, carrot Mandarin salad, and banana chocolate chip bar.
