Veterans

picnic Saturday in Albany

Vets

Helping Vets HQ of Albany will hold its eighth annual picnic honoring

all veterans, active duty military personnel and their families from

10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at Timber Linn Park in Albany.

A

picnic lunch featuring barbecued pork, turkey, salmon, hamburgers and

hot dogs will be served. Attendees encouraged to bring a side dish

or dessert to share with others. The picnic is an alcohol-free

event.

The

event will feature a special solemn ceremony honoring those who have

died in recent conflicts. World War II and Korean War veterans in

attendance will be honored, as well as Gold Star families who have

lost a loved one.

Other

activities include vendor booths, raffles and a silent auction with

money raised going to support the Albany-based Vets Helping Vets HQ,

an all-volunteer organization helping other veterans obtain veteran’s

benefits. A family zone with a dunk tank for children will be

available and the Bret Lucich Show will perform on the main stage.

Free

CPR training offered by hospital

Samaritan

Health Services will host a free community CPR training at Samaritan

Lebanon Community Hospital in conference rooms B and C on Tuesday,

Aug. 18.

This

free training, part of Samaritan’s Healthy Minds, Healthy Bodies

series, will take place from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

This

course covers adult CPR and choking. It is designed for individuals

who want to learn CPR but do not need a course completion card.

Heart-healthy

snacks and beverages will be provided. Pre-registration is required

as space is limited.

Vision

support meeting Aug. 19

A

display of visual aids for use by blind and low-vision people will be

the topic of the August meeting of the Mid Valley Low Vision Support

Group at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Brookdale Senior Living

Villiage, 1929 Grand Prairie Road, Albany.

Provider

for the display is Jeff Gardner, owner of the only privately owned

visual aids products retail store for blind and low vision people in

the Mid-Valley, located in Corvallis.

He

will bring a variety of hand-held magnifiers, a CCTV reading

machine, and other pertinent equipment. Items may be purchased at the

meeting or orders taken for later purchase.

All

Low Vision Support Group meetings are free and open to the

public. Light refreshments will be served.

Salsa-making

workshop Aug. 22

Do

you know salsa?

Find

out at a hands-on tomato/salsa workshop offered by Oregon State

University Extension Service – Lane County Master Food Preservers

from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Community of Christ

Church, 1485 Gilham St. in Eugene.

Participants

will learn the safe way to preserve locally grown tomatoes, make

salsa and sauces. Participants will leave the workshop with six jars

of home canned tomato products and a wealth of information on safely

preserving tomatoes and tomato products. Master Food Preserver

volunteers will be there to guide participants through the process

from start to finish.

Cost

of the workshop is $40 plus a lab fee of $20 to cover cost of

Fish

education

volunteers

needed

Salmon

Watch, a conservation education program sponsored by Oregon Trout,

needs volunteers to teach children about salmon lifecycles and

watersheds.

Session

topics include: salmon biology, riparian areas, macroinvertebrates

and water quality. Volunteers do not need degrees in the subject

areas to participate, though background in the area is helpful.

Would-be volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend one of two free

trainings to get ready to teach one of the four topics to Linn-Benton

fifth- and sixth-graders, on Aug. 28 in Corvallis and Aug. 29 in

Albany.

on Wheels weekly menu

Meals

on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the

Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays,

Tuesdays and Fridays.

The

Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time

diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested

donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea

upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The

lunch menu on Friday, Aug. 14, is Mexican chicken pasta or ground

beef and potatoes, green peas, garden vegetable salad, herb roll and

ice cream cup.

The

menu for Monday, Aug. 17, is beef mushroom patty or chicken patty

with gravy, Delmonico potatoes, country trio vegetables, multigrain

bread and zucchini brownie.

The

menu for Tuesday, Aug. 18, is spaghetti with meat sauce or spinach

cheese strata, mixed vegetables, tossed salad, French roll and

Mandarin pineapple cup.
