Tricks, treats, harvest parties and plenty more fun on tap this week

Plenty of Halloween and harvest party activities are offered this week by local organizations. Here is a list of many of them:

– Downtown Trick or Treat will be held from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.

See page 20 for a list of participating businesses, which will be handing out candy and other goodies along Main and Long streets.

– Sweet Home Assembly of God will hold a Harvest Party from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at 890 Mountain View Road.

The free event will include hot chocolate and cider, candy and games for kids of all ages.

– Community Chapel will hold a Trunk or Treat Harvest Party from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at 42250 Ames Creek Road.

The free event will include carnival games, trunk or treating, free hot dogs and popcorn, a photo booth, drawings and prizes, and live music.

– Sweet Home Public Library will hold a free Movie Night at 6:15 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, featuring “Divergent” at 1101 13th Ave.

The PG-13 movie is set in post-apocalyptic Chicago, where the population is divided into factions based on personality types and virtues and in which the heroine, Tris Prior, is classified as Divergent. When she uncovers a conspiracy to eliminate Divergents, she teams with the mysterious Dauntless Faction, nicknamed “Four,” to discover what makes the powers-that-be so afraid of them. The movie is based on books by Veronica Roth.

– The Sweet Home Elks Lodge will hold a Halloween Party from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 at 440 Osage St.

The event will feature treats, games and other fun as a precursor to the Downtown Trick-or-Treat event.

– Fair Share Gleaners will present a Walking Dead Haunted House Thursday through Saturday at 3714 Long St.

Hours are 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 30-31, and 7 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 1.

All ages are welcome. Admission is $2 per person for participants 8 and over. Children 7 and under free. Tricks and treats are also on the menu.

– Holley Church will hold its annual Trick or Treat Street event from 5 to 6:30 p.m . Friday, Oct. 31, in the Sweet Home Boys and Girls Club parking lot.

The event emphasizes safe fun and is free.

– Central Linn Elementary School will hold a Fall Festival Carnival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.

Cost is $5 per child (adults are free) or $20 per family. Activities for children through sixth grade include Old Woman in the Shoe Slide, Inflatable Hoop Shoot, Cougar County Jail, Candy Land Cupcake Walk, Chuck-a-Duck, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Wheel of Wisdom, Web of Wonder Face Painting (included in admission and much more.

Concessions will be available for purchase. Costumes are welcome.

– The American Legion in Brownsville will hold a Haunted House from 4 to 10 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30 and from noon to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31 at 339 N. Main St.

Admission is $2 or two cans of food.

– Mel Brooks’ musical “Young Frankenstein” is being performed through Nov. 15 by the Albany Civic Theater.

The musical tells the story of Frederick Frankenstein (pronounced “Fronk-en-steen”), grandson of the infamous Victor Frankenstein, who inherits his family’s estate in Transylvania. With the help of a hunchbacked sidekick, Igot (Eye-gore), and a leggy lab assistant, Inga (pronounced normally), Frederick finds himself in the mad scientist shoes of his ancestors. He brings to life a monster to rival his grandfather’s, which eventually escapes, and hilarity follows.

Shows are at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 31, Nov. 1, 6, 7, 8, 13, 14 and 15, and matinees are at 2:30 p.m. on Nov. 2 and 9.

Tickets are $14 for general admission and $11 for those under 18 or over 60. Tickets may be reserved at Sid Steven Jewelers (541) 967-8140 at 140 SW 1st Ave. in Albany, or purchased 45 minutes before the start of the show from the ACT Box Office, 111 W. 1st Ave.

– SafeHaven Humane Society will host its first-ever Howl-O-Ween Party for kids, parents and pets on Friday, Oct. 31 from 4 to 6 p.m. at its headquarters, 32220 Old Hwy 34 in Tangent.

The event is free and will feature costume contests for kids, adults and pets; arts and crafts; a scavenger hunt and trick or treating for the kids.

Costume contests get underway at 4:15 p.m. Advance registration is not required.

SafeHaven Humane Society is a non-profit, full adoption shelter that does not euthanize animals for population control. SafeHaven is solely supported by donations, events and adoption fees. Each year, the humane society finds homes for more than 1,600 cats and dogs.
