Third-graders at Holley School need help practicing math as much as possible. Opportunities are available any day from 11:00-11:30 a.m., 12:15-1:30 p.m., or 2-2:30 p.m.

Forestry group

offers scholarships

The Linn County Small Woodlands Association will be awarding four renewable $1,000 Oregon college scholarships to students graduating from Linn County high schools.

Application forms, to be returned by May 2, are available at all of the county’s high schools, at Linn-Benton Community College, and from Katie Kohl, LCSWA Scholarship Chair ([email protected]).

LBCC closure on

Thursday, April 17

Linn-Benton Community College and all centers will be closed to the public Thursday, April 17, for staff Inservice day.

Normal operations will resume Friday, April 18.

Fund-raiser to help

summer missions

A benefit fund-raiser sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 18 and 19, at East Linn Christian Academy, 36886 Victory Drive in Lebanon.

New and used items will be sold to help fund at trip to Nepal for two young men who are going on a five-week mission this summer.

Egg hunt Saturday morning at Sankey

The Sweet Home Rotary Club will hold its annual Easter Egg Hunt at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 19, at Sankey Park.

Children aged 10 and under are invited to participate. The Easter Bunny, with help from Sweet Home Rotary Club members, will hide more than 3,000 candy-filled eggs. Approximately 300 eggs will contain prize certificates donated by local businesses. The park will be divided into separate egg-hunting areas for different age groups.

Photographer Don Gonzalez of Sweet Home will sign books from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at a reception on April 19 at the Brownsville Art Center, 255 Main St.

Photography from his book “They Call it a Pow Wow” is on display in the Art Center through April 31.

Little Promises

auction RSVP

Little Promises Children’s Program will hold a dinner and and auction beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at the school, 28028 Pleasant Valley Road.

Cost for the pulled-pork dinner and all the fixin’s is $15 each or $25 for two. Childcare by Little Promises staffers, including a meal, is available at $5 per child. Each dinner plate purchase will include a door prize ticket.

RSVPs are requested for both adults and children by Friday, April 18 at (541) 367-4350.

The silent auction starts at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. and a live auction at 7.

Cemetery care

A workshop that provides basic information about the care and development of historic cemeteries will be offered April 23 in Albany.

The Historic Cemeteries 101 workshop, presented by the

Oregon Commission on Historic Cemeteries from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m., will include information about four key areas of cemetery operation: recordkeeping, mapping, protection and public events.

Workshop presenters are veteran cemetery enthusiasts from several regions of the state.

The commission maintains a list of all historic cemeteries in Oregon, provides grants, and helps train people in the care of cemeteries, including grave markers, structures, railings and curbs, ironwork, fencing and historic plantings.

There are approximately 850 listed historic cemeteries in

Oregon, including eight in the Sweet Home area and eight more around Brownsville.

Earth Day fair at

LBCC on Tuesday

Celebrate Earth Day Tuesday, April 22, at the fourth annual Earth Day Celebration and Sustainability Fair at Linn-Benton Community College, 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the college courtyard, 6500 Pacific Blvd. SW, Albany.

Learn about solar and wind energy, new automotive fuel technologies, bike transportation, recycling and composting. Take a tour of the college green roof and organic farm.

Purchase fresh produce from the farm, and recycled metal yard art, made by LBCC’s Welding Club students.

Donate old or slightly worn shoes for recycling, plant flowers, check out climate change sessions and demonstrations, and listen to LBCC choirs and Poetry Club performances.

The event is free and open to the public.

SAFE rubber duck race April 27

The 2014 SAFE Committee will hold a rubber duck race to raise funds for this year’s post-graduation Senior Alcohol-Free Entertainment party Sunday morning, April 27, at Weddle Bridge.

Cost is $5 and participants can buy as many as they want. The course will run down Ames Creek from Weddle Bridge to 12th Avenue. Players do not have to be present to win.

Cash prizes are $150 for first place, $100 for second and $50 for third.

OSU Pet Day open

to public May 3

Oregon State University will hold its 27th annual Pet Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 3, at Magruder Hall, located on 30th Street in Corvallis just south of Washington Way, and adjacent to the athletic department’s Truax Indoor Center.

Most activities are free, but there is a small charge for a few of the events. Pets are welcome at this always-popular event, on a leash.

Pet Day is designed as a way for the College of Veterinary Medicine to give back to the community, and help Oregon residents understand its operations and legacy of public service. Vendors and volunteers from organizations will staff booths at the event and provide information on animal health and wellness, nutrition, adoption and therapy. Many also provide free samples and other resources, spanning the four-legged gamut from pet food to shelter medicine.

Among the returning activities will be dog agility demonstrations, live reptiles, a petting zoo, tours of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, a pet costume contest, a dog frisbee show, a cat photo contest, and more. Food booths are also available.

Participants and their pets may join the Fun Run/Walk event at 9 a.m .; online preregistration for that event is requested by April 18.

Teen Challenge

Teen Challenge will hold its “Hope Lives Here” Spring Banquet fund-raiser at 5 p.m. on May 10 at the new Samaritan Center in Lebanon.

Social hour begins at 5 p.m., with dinner at 6. Cost is $300 for a table of eight or $40 per seat. To reserve a table or seats, call (541) 491-1002 by May 1.

Teen Challenge in Shedd is a one-year faith-based residential program for men 18 years and older struggling with drugs, alcohol and other life-controlling addictions.

Meals on Wheels

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, April 18, is breaded baked fish with Tartar sauce or baked ham with raisin sauce, Lyonnaise potatoes, zucchini and red peppers, sunflower seed bread and coconut cake.

The menu for Monday, April 21, is herb chicken or beef patty on a bun, baked beans, pineapple slaw and peanut butter fluff.

The menu for Tuesday, April 22, is garden chicken or ham and cheese mini salad on spinach Romaine, chunky tomato rice soup, bran wheat roll and peach cobbler.
