Steelheaders to meet Wednesday

The Mid-Valley Chapter of the NW Steelheaders will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at the Albany Senior Center, 489 Water Avenue NW, Albany.

Bill Taylor of Osprey Guide Adventures will present a program discussing and demonstrating his favorite techniques and locations for catching spring chinook.

Republicans host Dennis Richardson

The Linn County Republicans will host gubernatorial candidate Dennis Richardson of Central Point, along with candidates for the state Senate, House and Linn County Commission, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 2, at Pop’s Branding Iron, 901 Pacific Blvd.

Arrive early if you wish to spend more time meeting with the candidates one on one. People will have the opportunity to ask questions.

Richardson has been serving in the House of Representatives since 2002.

Dog obedience classes available

Dog obedience classes will be held through the Linn-Benton Community College Lebanon Center this spring.

The 10-week class meets Thursdays from 6:30 to 7:20 p.m. beginning April 3 at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St. Cost is $39. It will cover basic commands and equipment, socialization, rewarding good behavior, breaking bad behavior, games and tricks, and responsible pet ownership. Veterinary shot records and dog history form required, and are available at the center.

Life stories class available at LBCC

The writing class “Life Stories” will be offered through Linn-Benton Community College Community Education starting April 2.

Learn how to write your family history descriptively and in your own narrative style. Information on how to publish will be provided.

This 10-week class will meet at the LBCC Sweet Home Center Thursdays from 2 to 3:50 p.m. beginning April 4. Cost is $58. It will also meet Tuesday afternoons in Albany and Wednesdays in Lebanon.

Blood drive set for Friday afternoon

A blood drive will be held from 1 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, at the Evangelical Activities Center, behind Sweet Home Funeral Chapel, 1443 Long St.

SAFE’s spring

bazaar is Saturday

The Sweet Home SAFE Committee is hosting a spring bazaar from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 4 in the Sweet Home High School Activities Gym.

The event will include a variety of vendors and dance performances throughout the day by Hollywood Studios.

Refreshments are free.

Genealogy group meets April 4

The Lebanon Genealogical Society will meet at 12:30 p.m Friday, April 4, at the Lebanon Public Library.

The program, “Tracing Correct Information from Census Records and the Internet” will be presented by Jean Baker Harrison, who is well known for her knowledge of genealogical research. Everyone is welcome.

Committees plan ivy pull Saturday

Sweet Home Trails and the city Tree Commission are sponsoring an Ivy Pull from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 5.

Meet at the entry to Canyon Creek subdivision on the south end of 10th Avenue to work on the South Hills Trail. Bring gloves and cutting tools (pruners, loppers and hand saws). Screwdrivers or small pry bars are also helpful. Refreshments will be served when the work is done.

AARP offers driver safety program

AARP Driver Safety Program is being offered through Linn-Benton Community College April 7 and 8.

AARP’s program is designed to help develop and reinforce safe driving skills and techniques. Satisfactory completion of this class may qualify you for reduced auto insurance premiums (check with your insurance carrier).

Class meets Monday and Tuesday, April 7 and 8, from 8:30 to 11:20 a.m. at the Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St. Cost is $15 for AARP members, $20 for non-members.

Test and tune day set at speedway

Willamette Speedway will host a race car show and test-and-tune day on Saturday, April 5.

The car show will start at noon and last until around 3 p.m., with cars being displayed in the gravel area across from the pit sign-in building.

At 3 p.m. teams will be allowed to take their car back into the pit area and get their machines ready for the test-and-tune session, which will last from 4 p.m. until dusk. Attendees wishing to watch the practice from the main grandstands get in for free, while pit passes are $15 and car and driver fees are $30. Speaker to teach gardening April 8

After Five Connection will hold a dinner and program for local women from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 8, at King’s Coffee House, 651 Main St. in Lebanon.

The theme will be “Reaching women, as they are, where they are.” Learn how to do container gardening from a master gardener and hear from guest speaker Nancy Gabert, of Bend, whose life was dramatically transformed. Gabert is a residential appraiser and dramatist, who has performed in dramas and skits for years.

Cost is $7, which includes dinner and program.

PEO club plans

annual spring sale

P.E.O. Chapter FA, Sweet Home, is holding its annual spring plant sale.

The club is offering annual and perennial bedding plants, organic veggies, herbs, planters, hanging baskets and more. All plants are Oregon-grown.

Pre-orders are being taken until Thursday, April 10, with delivery on Friday, May 2, in time for Mother’s Day.

Kids’ art, writing sought for ’zine

Linn County Kids Create, http://www.linncountykidscreate.org, the local internet site for posting art and writing by Linn County students, is now putting together its 12th edition. All students in grades six through 12 living in or attending any school in Linn County are invited to submit their writing (in .doc format), their artwork (via photos in .jpg format) or their photographs (in .jpg format) for publication.

The deadline for submitting art or writing for the ninth edition is April 30.

Meals on Wheels weekly menu

Meals on Wheels, also known as Your Table or Ours, offers lunch at the Sweet Home Community Center to seniors over 60 at noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays.

The Senior Center serves a separate lunch on Wednesdays.

First-time diners are invited to come in and have a free lunch to give it a try.

Suggested donation is $3.50. All meals are served with milk, coffee or tea upon request and diabetic desserts are available on request.

The lunch menu on Friday, April 4, is diced beef stew or zucchini lasagna, cut green beans, spinach Romaine salad, cornmeal bread, and gelatin jewels with whipped topping.

The menu for Monday, April 7, is beef chili with beans or chicken and penne pasta, whole kernel corn, marinated spring garden salad, seven grain roll and chilled peaches.

The menu for Tuesday, April 8, is roast turkey with gravy or country fried steak, whipped potatoes, cut green beans, French bread and butterscotch bar.
